Please help me with Unix on my G4 1.0 ghz imac

I am trying to learn unix on my imac.Starting by simple things like opening files outside of Unix thru the commnd line. but it is not acknowledging any files outside of unix.
Every time i use the command open ....pdf or even open *.doc it always says "no such file", but the file does exist. I've been very careful to write the file name exactly as it truly is when using the command line.
