Ok, look. I have panther running fine, love it, but I want to use mail 1.3.11! I want to be able to use it with gmail. Ive seen loads of threads abou this, but i havent even set up mail for the first time! I want someone to tell me exactly to type in for:

Incoming Mail server
pop or imap?
user name
my gmail password or new password?
smtp

Please help me!:apple:

For the incoming mail server it would be:
pop.gmail.com
or
imap.gmail.com

user name would be your email address minus "@gmail.com", password would be your password.

smtp server:
smtp.gmail.com

You'll have to tell us a couple more things, first.

#1: Is IMAP enabled or disabled in GMail's settings?
#2: Have you used POP and IMAP before? If so, do you have a preference?

As for the other stuff you asked, I can partially answer it.

The incoming mail server will be pop.gmail.com if you're using POP, or imap.gmail.com if you're using IMAP. The username is your email address, without the @gmail.com at the end. The password you use is the same one you use to log into your Google Account. SMTP server will be smtp.gmail.com. You'll need to use authentication, and provide the same username and password here too.

Thanks, but ..

Guys, thanks alot for trying to help me.
But my mail just wont work, I think .3 hardly works with gmail.
Ill eventually get a new computer, a macbook or imac. thanks!

Ok

Ok, It still did not work. I did everything I entered, enabled POP, and carefully checked everything, but it still did not work.
But I gotmy wish: to see the user interface, and thats enough for me. thank you. :apple:

Thanks!

Well, thank you for helping me, but Im going to get an iMac soon! Ive tried to set up gmail with leopard before, and it is SOOOOO Easy!

What isn't working?

The biggest things besides getting your server, username, and password correct is making sure you have SSL turned on (for both SMTP and incoming) and making sure your ports are correct (993 for SMTP, which should also be authenticated, and whatever Google's instructions tell you to do for POP or IMAP).

Yes, Mail 1.3 is getting old, but IMAP, POP3, and SMTP that you'll be using to connect to your Gmail account are much older. If properly configured, it will work fine (although unless you have a reason to want to use a mail client, so will the Gmail Web interface :)).
