If I record a video with HDR (Dolby vision) enabled on my 12 Pro Max, Will I be able to watch it on my 2018 MBP in actual Dolby Vision?
Will this be possible only after updating to Mac OS Big Sur?

I have a 3 series TCL 4K Smart LED TV, 65" (65S425). It does not support DV, however it does support HDR10. If I transfer my video to a usb stick, and play it on the TV, Will it look almost like Dolby Vision or just standard definition?

I would really appreciate some help!

Thank you so much!

No your MacBook isn't capable of displaying Dolby Vision, so you'll see the sdr (non HDR) version, regardless of OS. There's hardware limitations there.

Your tv will probably display the video as HLG HDR, so it'll be HDR, but not Dolby Vision. How close this looks to Dolby Vision as you see it on the phones display has more to do with how good/bad your tv is at HDR. It's an older LCD, so it won't really look comparable to the iPhone.

If you get an OLED TV, or another high end tv with a true 10-bit panel + high localized brightness, then you can expect the big HDR impact, and in that case, HLG HDR may look pretty close to Dolby Vision. The biggest difference between hdr10 and DV is dynamic vs static metadata.

I read on the apple website, that any MBP introduced in 2018 and later will support HDR. I understand that is not DV, but I thought that maybe with Big Sur I would be able to view in DV. :(

Are any of the latest MBP's capable of displaying Dolby Vision?

If not, how would I edit my videos on a MBP? Please help!

Thank you for your reply! I appreciate it!

I found this

"With macOS Big Sur, which is currently available as a beta developer, Mac users can finally watch movies and TV shows on Netflix in 4K resolution. It also works with Dolby Vision and HDR10, which delivers more brilliant and vivid colors.

Unfortunately, according to Apple, the 4K High Dynamic Range stream requires a Mac introduced in 2018 or later. That means older Macs can only play 1080p videos on Netflix, even with macOS Big Sur installed.

Apple has also enabled the VP9 codec for apps on iOS 14 and tvOS 14, which allows users to watch 4K HDR videos on YouTube for the first time, but Safari 14 is yet to get this codec."

It is an old article

I am worried. How will I edit my videos if my MBP is not capable of Dolby Vision? What are my other options?

Please help!

Based on their videos so far, they seem to want you to edit on the phone itself. But I'm sure they'll update iMovie etc. If they haven't already to show you previews that are tone mapped to the sdr displays in MacBooks/iMacs etc. And still allow you to export to some type of HDR. At least I'd hope.

Will youtube in safari be able to play HDR after the Big Sur update?

They have updated iMovie, at least on iOS/iPadOS, to support the new HDR/DV video from the iPhone 12 line.
