If we already have such a thread please link it to me and I will delete this thread.

Otherwise, maybe there’s value in having a thread devoted to general recommendation requests.

I am looking for a quality tall office chair. Any links or recommendations are appreciated.

It sounds crazy, I know, but I have an electric adjustable desk and want to buy a chair to use when it’s in the standing height.

Sometimes I get tired of standing and dont want to lower the desk to sit so I’d like the option of using a “high top” style office chair to slide in and out of. Sorry for the defensive tone haha but I can see the comments coming already.

Well, the #2 post is a bot-bump of this post from ~3 months ago, but @Gutwrench, wondering if you ever found a solution.

Funny enough, I have the same scenario: adjustable desk, and occasionally I want to have it at standing height ... but sit. When I do, I grab one of our barchairs since it doesn't come up that often.

So to clarify: the desks we're talking about, at the low height, would be your typical ~29" tall, but then they raise to X, I believe mine goes to like 48". So now, in a standard height office chair, you'd be looking under the desk :D

I know Herman Miller makes a line of chairs (stools) intended for the standing desk height. The even make a stool height version of the classic Aeron chair. But is does not look like it would drop down low enough to work at a standard desk height.

Yeah, I couldn't find one that accommodated both heights. The split is a drafting height chair, that's like 37-38" (then there's a ton of options, including high[er] end like Steelcase), vs. "counter height", I guess some of that depends on how high you have your desk in standing mode. I'll have to measure mine ...

Measured!

So this is from the floor to the desktop surface, my low/sitting height is 30.5", and my standing height - measured from where I'm typing this right now :D is 46" I probably have mine higher - relative to me - in standing mode vs. sitting, because when I'm standing I like to lean into it. I also, usually toss down my Gorilla Grip standing mat (highly recommended BTW), so I guess that's another 1/4-1/2" less vs. the desk. I guess it's slightly relative to the user as well, I'm a little over 6', long-ish arms.

I should build a switch, rig it up to a Pi, code up a web service so people can query "Is DT standing at his desk ..." :p Or even better a range sensor, get an exact height response.

JSON:
{
    "current_height": 46,
    "unit_of_lenth": "Imperial/US Inches",
    "minutes_since_last_measure": 10
}

Thank you you guys!

A while back I was visiting an office on business and spotted the Herman Miller version...which matches the regular Aeron chair I currently have. Thank you @Weaselboy!

@D.T. - The HM stool bar version works nicely at the standing height but unsurprisingly doesn’t go low enough. I go through these foolish phases of being convinced I need something I really don’t. That turns out to be the case with the stool chair. I rarely use it. Oh well.

My latest phase is to resist buying a second desk. I‘m currently using a cheap folding table which doesn’t elevate to standing height. I either need less work or more desk space.

HM has (or at least had) two Aeron stools. You found these though I think.

I'm having trouble envisioning how one would even design a chair like that. It seems like for it to achieve the height needed, the main tube would need to sort of collapse within itself periscope style to get down low enough. Then where would you put the foot rest while the chair is in the low position?

I tend to have unrealistic expectations.

I have a Serta Office Chair, which comes in a variety of styles and prices. I paid about $300 for a leather version (vs faux leather) at Office Depot. Of note there was a similar, but lesser, still comfortable chair at Costco for about $220.

Well, in your defense, I believe you only asked for a standing office chair, I think I was the one who introduced the idea of it being "convertible". I actually found a number of options that had 9-10" as well as a few with 11-11.5" of height adjustment, which is quite a bit, my sit to stand different is about 15", but like I said, when I'm standing, I set it higher (relative to me), because I sort of lean into it, and I like standing on calls, so I get my phone / mic closer to my mouth - in fact, I just cranked mine down to ~42", so that's ~12" from my sitting height, and the desktop location / monitor sight line (sit v. stand) is about the same.

I look at small appliances like sandwich press/grills occasionally but get overwhelmed by all the options (and underwhelmed by the idea of having to find someplace to stash it when not meaning to use it in the next six hours. But if someone has a recco on such an item, I certainly have time to entertain the idea once again... while waiting for spring to show up and remind me that all I want to eat is a salad.
