A bit more info on Plexconnect. This app needs to run on a computer and you also need Plex Media Server (PMS) running. I run both on my iMac. You then load a profile to the aTV and change the DNS pointing it to the ip of the server running PMS. The profile hijacks the 'trailers' selection and points it to PMS instead. It actually works quite well. The key (for me at least) is to rip your movies to the m4v format and keep the kbps below 10,000.

Thanks a lot, much appreciated.

Is it really worth going through all of that bother when you can get a used 4th generation Apple TV on ebay for ~$80? So many things can go wrong if the Apple TV or Plex software is updated.

Exactly what I was thinking. I agree. The 4th gen can do so much more in general, anyway.

In general I agree. It’s just that I don’t really use Apple TV all that much. My main entertainment hub is my Xbox.

It’s just probably not worth for me to spend any money on a new device when the 3rd Gen can do the basic things I generally use it for.

I have used Plex Connect with a 2nd-gen Apple TV, and it worked pretty well. It basically hijacks the "trailers" app on the Apple TV and points it to your local Plex server instead. It worked well enough for me not to "jailbreak" the 2nd-gen Apple TV like many people have.
