7) Download firmware 4.0.1 firmware from some where (google). In Itunes, restore with file you just downloaded.

Sorry, meant "restore" using the 4.0.1 firmware file you downloaded in steps #3.

I have firmware 4.0.1 on my computer...should i restore it thru itunes now...or just wait to finish tinyumbrella to finish (running TSS server)..

Yes.

After putting Tinyumbrella into "TSS Server," open Itunes, click on your phone, hold Alt (Mac) or Shift (Windows) + click on "Restore," and select 4.0.1 firmware.

not it is stuck on my itunes says " We are unable to complete your activation,

You need an authorized SIM card in your iPhone when you activate it through iTunes for the first time. If you could borrow a friend's you would only need it for as long as it would take to be activated.

4G / 4.02 Unlock

Sorry i this is a slight hijack but did not want to start a new thread. Have done a search on '4.02 unlock' and this was the closest thread. Have a 4G with 4.02 and have moved from USA to Europe and need to unlock to get a local sim/carrier.

I have seen several commercial (not free) web sites that claim to be able to unlock 4.02/4G. Could anyone provide some color on these services (best/worst) and what risks/issues I need to consider.

Any unlock requires a jailbreak and money spent on these scam sites is money lost - no one has a working JB for 4.0.2 and here's why:

downgrade

hi guys can i downgrade from 4.2 to 4.0 or 4.1 on my 3gs i have shsh files saved for 4.0 on my laptop the reason for this is because my phone is stuck in recovery mode with the itunes logo and the usb lead and the only way round it i can see is to update with i tunes please help im going out my mind here

Looks like I am SOL. Will have to jailbrake my daughter's old 3G. From what I've read, the rollback to 4.01 is either impossible, risky or beyond my IT skills.
