Plugging mac dvi/hdmi conversion cable

Every time I plug in my mac book pro to the tv using my dvi/hdmi conversion cable I get a screen that says you need to restart your computer. I tried starting it up with the cable in and it came up with the same error. Any ideas on why this isn't working?
 
...my whitebook uses mini-DVI to DVI and then I use a DVI to HDMI cable and I don't have that problem... your MBP uses mini-DP though, right?
