has the bigger real estate screen space of the plus really has been taken advantage of?
has Apple and app developers maximized on this or the bigger screen could have benefited the user more that what currently is

I think the advantage shows mostly in apps like Safari, Maps and other apps where every mm extra real estate is useful. As the elements in those apps usually scale nicely to the screen size, this is possibly the answer to your question.

i still feel or think the full potential has not been reached

when the rumoured 4inch iPhone makes a comeback it may probably be a popular preference from those that probably clamoured for the larger screen

I don't see people rushing back. Within days of getting my 6, my old 5s seemed ridiculously small and cramped. I think that getting used to a smaller screen once you've used a larger one is harder than the opposite.

I've found the extra screen size very useful for just about everything. However, most apps don't take advantage of the extra space or even allow their apps to switch to Landscape mode. I can understand, since Apple now has so many different screen sizes and resolutions--it's almost getting to be like Android.

It may come up to the final design of the 4 inch

Imagine an almost bezel free 4 inch....that will be tempting

agreed when I made the jump from a 5s to the 6+ I couldn't believe how long I had lived before. Holding the two together was unbelievable! Even holding the 6 compared to it was the same felling!

The only reason why I bought an iPhone is because they fixed the issue why I went and got an android device to begin with and that is screen size. I refuse to get a device smaller then 4.5 inches. Plus the new 4 inch phone isn't exactly a new phone but more of just updating the specs to keep it up with the times

By the way I have an iPhone 6+ but I am not completely blind to the prospect of a smaller one handed device

Even the same size Plus screen on reduced bezels will be worthwhile

Once I go to 6+, AND use it for awhile, every time I pick up my wife's 6s, 6s not only feel like smaller in screen size, but 6+ is just more comfortable for reading article/email for long time.

6+/6s+ not just 27% (that is almost 1/3) screen size larger than 6/6s, but it is also clearer in turn of font.
Here is good article explain why 6+/6s+ has clearer font:

I picked up a Nexus 6, and now nearly anything feels small. I don't think I could go back to anything smaller than 5.5".

But to answer your question, I don't believe that the screen real estate is taken advantage of at all on both stock Android and iOS. They have nearly no big screen optimizations. I do believe that iOS 10 will take more advantage of these larger screens though. Hopefully Apple sees that and fills the need.

There we go :)

But it will still be a tiny display if you're used to larger. In fact, less bezel might make it seem even smaller.

Even if it's bezel free it wouldn't interest me. 4 inches is just way too small. I've been using phablets since 2012 so I can't go back to using a small phone now. I left iOS because I wanted a larger phone and only returned when they released the 6 plus.

However I can see that there might be some people who didn't want a larger phoned and felt forced into getting the 6/6S because it was all there was when it was time to upgrade and never adjusted to the bigger size.

Exactly. Once Apple announced the 6 plus with a 1080p it was a given that I would return to the iPhone.

An iPhone phablet
1080p display
128GB internal storage
Excellent battery life

All these meant that it was game over for android.

If having a one handed iOS device was really an issue for me I'd rather pick up an iPod touch to use alongside my 6S plus than go back to a 4 inch phone.
