I have an iMac with OS X Tiger already on it, and have a new MacBook with OS X Leopard. The MacBook came with an install DVD for Leopard but says MacBook on it. Can I use it to install Leopard on my iMac??

No, the discs are linked only to the computer that they come with. You will need to purchase a retail copy for an upgrade as the restore discs are provided for, well, restoring.

Or, wait three months and buy Snow Leopard (assuming it is an Intel iMac)

Dang! O well... When I buy a retail copy, will I have to back everything up, or can I just run the install and restart and still have everything in place?
