Starting today, the popular podcast platform Pocket Casts is available on all Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models. The app was already available on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

"Your podcasts, your Up Next, your place in every episode, right on the screen in front of you," said Pocket Casts, in a blog post. "Start something on your phone at the bus stop. Finish it on the couch that night, exactly where you left it. Nothing to re-find. Nothing to sync by hand."

Nice 👍😎 I just use the regular Apple podcast app on my Apple TV to watch all of my podcasts - I watch a lot of Leo Laporte tech podcasts (such as MacBreak Weekly) on there as well

Definitely planning on replacing my 2022 Apple TV when the new one comes out! I just hope that they don’t copy what Roku just did and raise prices by a lot:

The price increases don't make sense.

The Streaming Stick Plus, Streaming Stick 4K, and Streambar SE all have 1GB RAM, yet the price increases are all different. Meanwhile, the Roku Ultra with 2GB RAM will see the same $50 price increase as the 1GB Streambar SE.

And a $30 price increase for a 5 year old device? 😂 (Streaming Stick 4K was announced on Sep. 20, 2021 as 2022 year model)

Cool that we get more apps on the Apple TV.

But is this podcast app really "popular"? I know it used to be cool many many years ago, but I haven't heard anyone use it in the last like 5 years. Everyone seems to be using Apple Podcasts or Overcast or Spotify

I’m not super into podcasts, which may be why the Apple Podcasts app is enough for me, but what does Pocket Casts offer that makes it worth using over the default one?

Yes, I've listened to 259 days worth of podcasts using the app since 2018. They're one of the few apps that actyally honored the lifetime purchase after moving to a subscription model too so I continue to get new features.

That's because for a few years after the original developer sold it, it was bought by a weird conglomerate of broadcasters in an attempt to monetize it.

As I recall, that went poorly for everyone.

Then Automattic bought it, owned by Matt Mullenweg.

I seem to remember some controversy there, but I don't remember if people decided he was the good guy or bad guy.

(Quick edit after looking into it briefly. Seems like he wasn't exactly the good guy.)

So it's had a rough few years, while those other three you named have been quietly chugging along their expected path.

Also, Overcast is really good these days. Hard to beat.

Still can’t do automatically created chapters like Apple Podcasts and Spotify ..

I think the reason I use Pocketcasts is because they have more variable playback speeds (I typically listen to mine at 1.6 speed) and the user interface is still great. I used to use overcast but I'm not a fan of the developer

I wish overcast were available on the Apple TV as well, but inertia is also one hell of a drug and I don’t see myself switching over to another podcast app unless the overcast app itself stopped working overnight.

I mean, that hasn't stopped them from pounding "Subscribe to plus!" in every other screen, not giving Apple Watch support unless you subscribe or almost putting ads on the main player screen for lifetime purchase subscribers before they got an insane amount of blowback and reverting. It's my favorite podcast app but they're always trying to find nickels and dimes in every corner of the app when they can.

Id also like to know how many new features you're thinking of because all the ones I can think of are behind the subscription paywall.

They probably just raised it so when they release the new one in the fall then the price increase isn't a story

I've literally never seen an ad, I have every new feature, and I've had access to the Apple Watch app since day one. You must not have made the cutoff to be considered lifetime.

I still use it. I did it when Apple ruined Podcasts, I never liked Overcast nor Spotify.

I love it, it's a great app that does what I want - plays podcasts in the right order. There is not a lot of other things that get in the way, especially in Podcasts. It does the Smart speed too.

I was just looking a few weeks ago to see if they had an Apple TV app, and I was disappointed they didn't. But apparently I just had to be patient! So I'm happy to see they added this.
