Podcast screen

So while the phone is docked and charging at night I like to listen to a podcast with the phone unlocked, with iOS 8 the screen would dim depending on the screen lock setting but not actually lock the phone which I liked. But now with ios9 the brightness stays the same until the podcast timer it self sends the phone to sleep.

My question is this a bug or just a change I don't like from iOS 8 to iOS 9?
