ok so I know I can use Siri to play a specific podcast but say I want to browse on my phone and select one, is there a way to select it and have the HomePod stream it direct like you can with music rather than the phone stream it to the HomePod?

Maybe I’m just misunderstanding but like that? Siri is the only direct input method for the HP. Once it starts you can use the iPhone to interact with it like music.

So you need to get Siri to play a podcast then click on that screen to enter the podcast app on your phone?

You can ask Siri on the HomePod to play a podcast. Alternatively, you can play a podcast on your iphone and airplay it to the Homepod. These are the only two ways as far as I know. Handoff support for music doesnt happen at the moment which I guess is what you are partially asking.

Tap the airplay icon from inside the Podcasts app

Tap the HomePod.

Play the podcast. You can use the podcasts app as you normally do.

This method essentially tells the HomePod you’re going to be using it for podcasts. And it handles the actual streaming - and your iPhone controls it as just a remote control (like you mentioned for music).
