Do the Kroger's have the Verifone MX915 (black shiny and comes with Contactless on by default) or the MX870( grey old ones). So I asked Kroger about Apple Pay and they said they were evaluating Contactless payments still and they said a few of their stores do accept them. I'm sure they will feel the pressure at some point and choose to turn it on, especially since most Kroger's already have MX915 terminals. To find what what places accept Apple Pay use this site: http://www.mastercard.us/cardholder-services/paypass-locator.html is helpful or you can use the MC nearby app on your phone which ties to that same online Paypass database. There is also this MR thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1806254/ I bet there are many ma and pa places to use it as well, which is fun to find and use it there. For example, I see that a The Fresh Market in Houston is on the Paypass locator, 5016 San Felipe ST Houston, TX 77056.

I think a lot of stores that say at a corporate level that they're testing ApplePay hadn't actually communicated that most of the employees. Most places I go no one has even heard of ApplePay.

Apple really is changing mobile payments. Google is forced to update/promote Wallet to ensure Android users don't miss out. Apple are getting stores to install NFC systems to ensure customers can pay with their phones.

???

Google is forced to update wallet? Ummm no, wallet will work just fine where Apple pay works.

Promote, yes, but that's no bad thing. Google is getting an almost free ride from Apple here as retailers install NFC because of Apple Pay, Google Wallet customers also benefit.

it frustrates me when I see NFC terminals that are there, but don't work.

Alas, that issue isn't limited to the US; one of the supermarkets here has NFC terminals that say "swipe or present card" at first... then change to just "swipe card" when you try to use NFC. Meanwhile the same supermarket in Australia accepts NFC with my NZ-issued card.

........Whataburger and McGovern Centennial Gardens (although to be fair it does say disabled) here in Houston are the biggest offenders........
Apple pay actually works at the Whataburger drive thru near me in Schertz,TX, which is a suburb of San Antonio. I've successfully used it a dozen times in the past couple of months and most recently did it yesterday. I rarely go inside but did try it at one of the registers inside a month ago and it didn't fully work. It recognized the NFC coming from the phone because my credit card photo was showing on my iPhone screen but it wouldn't push through. Since then I have continued to use it in the drive thru and it works every time. Another place where Apple pay worked for me that is not an official merchant is Home Depot.

Canada has NFC payments everywhere and I've never seen anybody pay with a phone. Finally with ApplePay, that will change! Come on Apple... get it working here in Canada already. :)

I use it everyday at my job.
Love I can use Apple Pay, even when Im on a phone call :)

Talking on your phone while checking out at a store is rather rude, no?

I meant to stay competative, I wasn't trying to have a go at Google.

In the UK our cards have NFC payments built in. Tap to pay and no pin. But there's a £20 limit for security reasons and the hardware on London busses that accepts these cards is hit and miss. Normally takes me about 6 attempts.

By the time my contract expires, Apple Pay should have launched over here :D

I think the reason for the delay in the UK is that Apple is probably trying to negotiate a higher limit that the current 20 pounds.

Retailers and merchants may be dragging their heels because of contractual obligations or competitive factors, but I think eventually, you'll see ApplePay/NFC become widely accepted. Just a matter of when. :apple:

To be fair, other than a few notable idiot companies, most companies have simply never turned NFC on because (nearly) nobody in the USA had the capability in their wallet, anyway. There has been no demand for contact-less until Apple Pay came out.

That's why it's so hilarious that Apple hasn't worked it out for the UK, yet.

Apple Pay's unavailability in the UK (and the rest of the world) isn't a problem with the payment networks. It has been reported many times that a card issued by a US bank can be loaded into Passbook, and used outside the US at merchants that support NFC payments.

It's the tokenization used by Apple Pay. Even though it is a standard published by the major card company consortium (EMV), the implementation is currently limited to US banks. Until an issuing bank makes the changes to their backend systems to issue the token used by Apple Pay, and then map the token to the actual account number on authorization and reconciliation, Apple Pay will be unsupported on their cards.

Apple had been working on this with US banks for most of 2014. Financial institutions move very slowly, especially on things like this. Satisfying the auditors and the regulators is a long and tedious process.

Talk to your bank. Apple can't do anything to "get it working" without their cooperation.

I've tried to use Apple Pay several times at a Whataburger near me. But, it has always been inside.

Like you said: it doesn't fully work. The prompt for my thumbprint pops on on my phone, and it accepts it. But, the authorization fails. And swiping the exact same credit card works fine.

I've had similar experiences at Whole Foods, and at vending machines in the D/FW airport. So, I'm guessing there is something not quite right in their implementation, and the authorization request is missing something.

Yeah. It's strange though how it always works flawlessly in the Whataburger drivethru for me everytime. The first few times that I did it, the employee was amazed and didn't realize it was possible. Now I think they are all aware of it at that location.

I know. It's still hilarious.

Would love to use apple pay, but not one of the places I shop accepts it. Hoping things turn around over the next year or so.
