Go go Pokemon! Glad to see this be such a huge success, I was worried the game would be too simple to be enjoyable but there you have it! I wonder if this has had any impact outside the game, if folk are now buying up the older, adventure games in the series?

I haven't got it yet because it's not out here. But how many generations does Pokemon Go span? Gen 2 and 3 had some of my fave designs and I'd like to get hold of them.

Pretty easy to get the number one spot when you already have an established brand name. If this was Billy's Catch A Monster it wouldn't have made it to national news. The fact that it is Nintendo and bringing some nostalgia back with it is why it's number 1. Not exactly a bad thing but come on, it's obvious this didn't get there by just word of mouth. There's money being exchanged all over the place to hype it.

Really? Pokemon is one of the best selling game franchises ever, even the new 3DS ones has sales equivalent to the older games.
It's anecdotal for sure but I wasn't interested in this until I heard friends talking about it. Word of mouth is insanely powerful (it's what made turned my hobby game projects into a well paid career). It might be nostalgia to some but, as I say, the series still sells incredibly well and many see this as an enjoyable sidestep in that series.

Just seems a bit strange having to explain that of course it sells because it's a huge series. Apple Watches sell more than Pebbles now, Coke sells more than Barry's Red Cola, etc etc.

YOU CAN SEE THE POKÉMON THROUGH THE PHONE. ITS RIGHT THERE, ITS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!

I'm just amazed by this technology. Only Nintendo could do this.

I was walking down the alley where I played in as a child yesterday. We had balls, walkie talkies, biked, or just ran around. Occasionally we'd sit down inside in front of the Nintendo (NES) but it was much better outside until the parents got scared of the "scary" alley between all our houses.

Yesterday in that same alley of my youth there were kids looking for Pokemon and sometimes parents walking with them.

+this 100x

As a kid of the 90s in Los Angeles, being outside was so dangerous. Maybe it really was, but either way, can you blame my generation for not wanting to go outside (Seamless, PS4, VR!)? I'm glad people are rediscovering their neighborhoods with their kids. Parents should play with their kids more. Maybe they'll understand why we spend so much time online. Heck, I'd say the Internet has the potential to be way more dangerous than kids walking around their block at night! At least the parents can say where their kids were last seen!

AR has been around for a long time, i have an app that shows me the name of mountain peaks, its pretty cool and handy. Nintendo just made it fun.

Apparently you've never used any of the astronomy apps, augmented reality apps, or vr apps.

I still have yet to see anyone playing this game around my area when I'm out or taking a run with my dog.

I don't have the app installed (and don't plan to), but good for Nintendo.

Hopefully this opens Nintendo's eyes to the gold mine that they've been leaving on the table.

Properties like Super Mario and Zelda would instantly rocket to the top of the App Store if released on iOS.

Nintendo can remain a hardware company by selling remotes for improved gameplay. They've always been the leading innovator in remotes for the gaming industry. They can continue to do so as a developer for iOS where they'd have access to their largest audience yet.
One idea would be to release a WiiU type remote where you insert an iPad or iPhone for a second screen while playing the game on AppleTV for asynchronous multiplayer (ie Mario Chase) or dual screen play. tvOS now allows developers to require a remote. That's an opportunity for Nintendo.

Go go you good thing !!!! And this is just a partial launch....

Dear Nintendo: Welcome to this decade. You were incredibly late to the game; but even so, you will now be reaping tremendous benefits from users who grew up with your characters. Better late than never, I suppose. Want your stock to go stratospheric? Bring Mario and Zelda to the mobile party and watch the cash pour in. Sincerely, Your Loyal Fanbase

Should be interesting to see if it lasts.

I foresee it being like a gym membership after New Year's. People will play for a bit but soon get sick of having to put in the effort to go outside and wander around.

Only time will tell if this app makes it big in the long run or turns out to be the biggest flash in the pan of all time.

I love how everyone thinks a Mario game would be anything other than a crummy runner or whatever works best for the masses. Maybe a mario candy crush???? because bringing any old game to mobile would suck big time. Remember all those timed jumps in Super Mario Bros that require you to HOLD B while running and hitting A to jump??

Sorry to piss on everyones parade.

Well, I haven't touched a game console in almost 25 years but if they brought Super Mario Brothers SMB 2, and SMB 3 to the App Store, they would all be instant buys for me.

I'm not concerned about the controller issue you mentioned. It will get worked out one way or another. As the other person said that you replied to, Nintendo could start selling MFi game controllers and likely make a fortune.

What? That no one will hang out with you on TeamSpeak now because they are actually walking in the sun and communicating in person?

When i was a kid the greatest games, were metal gear solid, final fantasy 7 etc. now we have ...... pokemon

It's a fad. Nothing revolutionary. We've seen this happen over and over again. The Wii U was the most popular console, and then it died. Flappy Bird was the most popular game, then it died. Candy Crush was the most popular, then it died. See a pattern?

Holy smokes could you imagine if they bring Super Mario Brothers to this platform!!? Lets hope this opens their eyes and the start bringing some of their classic catalog games to iOS and Android.

I assume you've never played an emulator on your phone. It's not as big of an issue as you think.

Am I the only one surprised that Angry Birds isn't on this (albeit short) list of hugely successful mobile games? They made a freakin' MOVIE out of it. Surely it was bigger than Slither.io. Admittedly I don't follow mobile gaming religiously, so if I'm missing something obvious, let me know nicely.

I would have thought so too, as I've never even heard of slither.io... But my guess is that Angry Birds peaked too early (circa 2010/2011). The mobile market has increased dramatically (10x?) since then.
