In an upcoming update, popular augmented reality game Pokémon Go will gain support for the Apple Health app, developer Niantic announced today.

Adventure Sync, a new feature, will use walking distances pulled from Apple Health to let you earn candy and hatch eggs even when the Pokémon Go app isn't running.

Niantic says Adventure Sync will also provide Pokémon Go users with a weekly summary on incubator and candy progress right alongside activity statistics.

Through the trainer profile, Pokémon Go users will be able to see the number of kilometers walked each week, and rewards will be available for each milestones that's reached.

Adventure Sync is "coming soon" and alongside Apple Health on iPhones, it will work with Google Fit on Android devices.

Pokémon Go can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

This might have kept me in the game instead of abandoning it long ago. It was just too frustrating to always have to have the app open when walking, not getting credit for treadmill time, etc.
I more or less abandoned it, too. But I still have the app and my data on my phone. We can still get back in there. I just probably won’t bother until spring. I don’t do much walking in the winter.

Forcing any App together with Apple Heath is a PR joke made for the younger among us.

As an active daily player, I really love this. It's something I suggested right when the game was released. I really like that I'll finally be able to get something in the game for all the walking I do at work and around the house. It's also crazy how many people online so far don't seem to understand how this will work. No, it won't use GPS in the background, no, it won't use any more data than having the app open, and no, it won't make the Go Plus useless (you can't spin PokéStops or catch Pokémon with the Health app integration!).

Welcome change, and the weekly stats will be awesome too!

Finally! Even though there is a GO app on the watch, we still need the phone with us and the app on the phone running in the background to get walking credits. Now, I don’t need to carry my phone with me if all I want are walking credits.

This is one of the worst successful games in history.

Their progress was so painfully slow - it is supposed to be fun catching the same Pokemon over and over. Ugh. When I open it now it seems to be a bit better but I am so burned out on the game.

I assume this will adopt Apple Watch walking data too so you don’t even need phone with you to get step count this distance up? That will be awesome! Very welcome addition

If Pokémon integration gets some people to exercise, that is a good thing. Too many lazy people allowing sedentary lifestyle to have a bad impact on health.

The Apple Watch reports all its data into Health Kit too, so this will work the same with the Apple Watch as with an iPhone. If you have the LTE watch, it will upload it from time to time when opening Health Kit. If you have a wifi-only, it will upload that data when it's connected to a known wifi network.
