It's actually not an extrapolation. One says, essentially: "I hope these people [who the facts now clearly prove committed multiple felonies, not to mention unethical acts] are not punished. My moral sense and understanding of the law informs me that they did nothing wrong." We don't have to extrapolate to understand the fact that anyone who thinks unethical acts are ethical and/or felonies are not illegal is thinking like a criminal.

None of your entire clarification even suggests that I myself will become a lifelong criminal. Perhaps I over sympathize with criminals, but that does not make me one.

Either way you're likely not a psychologist and likely have no idea what you're talking about. Good day sir.

Really?

Come out of this okay? Really? They basically paid for stolen merchandise...and worse, they did it KNOWINGLY.

And, I (and anyone else with half a brain) knew Apple's lawyers would use exactly this defense. Leaking unannounced products does hurt sales. It's hard to prove, but it's hard to disprove too. People hear about a new iphone, see the pictures, and put off buying a current 3GS. That's lost sales. That's a loss of a 2 year contract which is worth thousands to Apple & ATT.

Gizmodo and Chen should pay whatever the law says. They don't deserve leniency when they KNEW what they were doing was wrong.

Nope. Not a psychologist. But I submit that someone who over-sympathizes with criminals is more likely than the average population to end up being a criminal. Just a hypothesis, of course. So perhaps that is an extrapolation.

I hope Jason Chen and Gizmodo come out of this okay. They did nothing wrong.

Clueless comments like that belong on page 1.

Considering the additional info gathered and reported since that time, and all the member comments spanning 77 pages (where that quote comes from), as well as other threads discussing this same topic... that utterance is the equivalent of walking through the hallways in a public high school with a "Kick Me" sign scotch-taped on one's back.

With any luck, you may be featured on next week's SNL episode of "Really?"

:p

Since most life-long criminals hold similar views to you in terms of right and wrong, and what that constitutes I think the chances are high that someone like that will end up being lifelong criminals.

People don't become lifelong criminals by accident. They become lifelong criminals because they have a fundamental lack of understanding right from wrong.

I have picked up enough information over the years to know people who end up habitual criminals and/or are sociopaths have these things in common. Believing that Chen and company did nothing wrong at all clearly demonstrates an inability to fundamentally separate right from wrong. It is not like this is some kind of borderline case or situation. It is fairly black and white. So to be on the wrong side of it and state without equivocation that they did nothing wrong... well it is a good sign.

I certainly would take good odds on how it will turn out for anyone who believes such a thing. If someone posted here that they felt it was okay to torture small animals to satisfy their curiosity, I could also make some determinations about them, with a high degree of accuracy. No different here.

Sure there will be exceptions. Most likely, though, is those exceptions will simply be life long criminals who just were lucky enough not to get caught. They will still be criminals in most cases.

Really? All this over a phone? This leads you to believe I'll be a criminal for the rest of my life. You're honestly unbelievable. Really a piece of work.

Let's just say that both your morality and your understanding of the law are lacking if you really believe it isn't wrong to purchase stolen goods.
It doesn't mean you will ever commit a felony yourself, it's just curious that you're so sympathetic to criminals.

Your continued insistence on trying to diminish the significance of the act only servers to further the idea that the mindset is definitely in place.

"I got to go to jail over taking just 20 bucks from the cashier?"

"I only sold a little coke. This is silly. Why don't you go arrest someone who killed somebody."

"Come on man, the guy had all the money in the world. He wasn't going to miss one watch. He probably has 20 other watches."

"If you think about it, she was kind of asking for it."

"The guy disrespected me. I had to do what I had to do. Seriously, you going to jam me up just because I straightened out someone who disrespected me?"

"It's just a phone."

I think the more disturbing aspect of TuffLuffJimmy's type of reasoning is that is so commonplace today. Sadly, the majority of people I know, think nothing of stealing and justify in the most illogical and unethical ways.
