This is nasty... external display as the last in a chain of 2 WD thunderbolt drives.

It appears this indeed has something to do with being the last item in a chain of two thunderbolt devices. When connected directly there's no issues.
Not sure if the issue is a cable, the Thunderbolt drive, or a bandwidth issue.

new bench result in bootcamp win 8.1.
First ,I install mac fan control to show the FAN speed and GPU temp.
aka little triangle in task bar via mouse pointer.
As a result temp hit 97c occasionally but constantly 90+- .
while max 2300 rpm
After 2 and half month much quiet down my purring and rattle RiMac somehow?
(May be too much dust piled in cavity)

My M290X is indeed faster than that....(and the temp was never more than 86C):
