Open world, or linear?

i’ll vote for open world - assuming there’s a plot to guide you in some general direction.

open world with no story and just a big sandbox… nah….

Example of open world with story: The Witcher 3 or Skyrim
Example of open world without a decent story/point: No Man’s Sky

I just finished Ghost of Tsushima, which was great.

I was beginning to get burned out on it, though.

I used to love open world like Breath of the Wild, but it has become overused and underutilized in many ways, especially by Nintendo. Nowadays I actually prefer levels like the ones in Sly Cooper where you had areas to roam around, but they weren't connected. I didn't really care for the ones in Super Mario Odyssey, but Super Mario Galaxy had a nice linear progression.

Open world has to be really well done. I replayed Elden Ring on the PC then the PS5 and I rarely will replay s game. Recently, Ubisoft is easy to pick on because they just do it stale.
I started Elden Ring, but got to a point where the difficulty frustrated me.

Amazing game, though.

Problem is that both have excellent examples and bad ones and it's hard to pick one. Two examples of how it's done;
Open world example RDR2: awesome open world with loads of random content that can happen while traveling.
Linear world example: TLoU series: awesome linear story that doesn't feel limiting at all.

You’re right; I guess it depends on what mood you’re in.

Yeah, depends on my mood. I tend to put more time into open world games, but a game on rails is more likely to generate "holy crap this is awesome!" moments.
