Even when I went jungle trekking 10hrs was plenty of life before I got access to a power point. I do think in the future Apple will continue to push the battery life bar. Having said that if igzo or other low power screen tech takes off I'm not sure if Apple being Apple would keep the same battery and give us 20hrs in the same shell or make the newerer iPad even thinner keeping the 10hr standard.

With brightness at 50% on the ipad 3, I'm getting over 10 hours for reading/web browsing and a little over 8 hours for gaming. Got about the same on ipad 2.

Always go with the upgraded technology. Being the geek that I am I would never buy yesterdays technology now just because it's battery lasts longer. It would be like getting a dumb phone using Symbian, who's battery would last 3 days but barely goes on the Internet and has minimal features or buy a smartphone with the latest tech, web browser, good camera etc. The battery life isn't important to me when there are so many more advantages to the latest device. Especially when we are already getting 10 hours of battery.

20 hours of battery life only good for discuss. It will never happen with apple in real word. When ipad 2 come out last year, ifixit open up the ipad 2 you can see there's well enough space to put a ipad 3 size battery. But apple just won't did it.

Display technology has needed to come a long way for years now. Cell phones take pics at a higher resolution than almost every display around. The 'retina' resolution displays that we will see in the next few years are welcome from professionals and regular users alike.

Retina all the way. I'd rather use a better display for shorter periods of time, then looking at a display that is not as good for longer periods

For me it's not about battery life as such, but efficiency. After buying the new iPad it wasn't long before I returned it and went back to my much loved iPad 2 as it offers the same battery life but uses a battery almost half the size.

Maybe energy consumption isn't top of everyone's list, but as a renewable energy student its certainly something I rate more highly! :)

I am very happy w/ the battery life even w/ the new display. I am not seeing any difference in times b/t chargings vs when I had the iPad 2.

Yeah I know. This is exactly the reason I made the poll. I think the concept of the retina display is cool, but unless the difference is stark I think I would feel guilty about using up so much more energy just for a marginal jump. I think the retina display on the iPhone 4 was a huge jump and well worth the extra battery consumption. I guess I just need to go see the new iPad to determine if the display is really worth the energy consumption rate.

The problem with that thought process is that it stifles technological growth if everyone thought like this, nobody would buy the retina display iPad and it would be chalked as a fail. The next iPad could go back to a lower resolution screen because of customer demands.

The extra bit of power is insignificant to the amount of power wasted of just 1 of your local grocery stores leaving their lights on all night long.
