A lot about courage, and what it takes to be yourself in a world that mostly hates you.

Fair enough... I am probably almost in that world anyway.

I don't know if someone's already mentioned this, but the "Straight" option should be "Heterosexual." Otherwise it implies that Heterosexual is the straight, right way to be, and homosexual is a demented alternative (i.e. Not "straight").

Let the bent ones decide if it's offensive ;)

Eh- I think everyone gets it. I certainly don't find that term offensive.

Yes fine, but the words we use can be important too. Even commonly used phrases and expressions in language can reveal latent prejudice. Still I am not going to make a crusade out of this example. :p

Words are only as powerful or offensive as people let them be...

I think they mean words are not inherently offensive. They only have any meaning if the person chooses to take offense. Words have no power. We give them power.

Certainly splitting hairs with that one don't ya think?

OK well in that case I disagree. Certain words have meaning in society and in general, as an individual one can't control that. If someone uses a racial slur against someone else, it is the intent that is important not the word. Words really do have power.

They only have that power because, at some point, people took offense to those words. All racist words used to be regular words.

Also, some words can be regarded as offensive, or not, depending on who says it and who hears it. Some gays take offense if they are called "queens" and some don't. Also the word "queen" can have a different meaning depending on who says the context.

We are the ones who give power to the words and we can choose not to.

I disagree, no racial slur has power. If the person being called the name chooses not to be offended, then they take all power the word could have away.

This removal of power if proven everytime a person of the same "race" calls someone else of the same "race" a racially offensive word specific to them. Most of the time this word is not offensive to either party. Therefore we know its not the word.

p.s. I put race in quotes because I think the "race" arguments are retarded. Last time I checked we are all the same race. Homo-sapien.

We all belong to the species Homo Sapiens Sapiens - as opposed to Homo Sapiens Neandertalensis. It is not a race.

Technically race, in biology, is used to define a subspecies. Our subspecies being homo-sapien (homo-sapien sapien). Part of the hominid family.

If we want to have a science discussion.:D

I always equated "straight" not so much with "straight as an arrow", but with "go straight home after school, you're grounded". Boring and restrictive.
Homosexual only sounds negative to me because of the hateful ways I heard it being used growing up. I hope when my kids hear the word homosexual, they think only of it as a trait, like hair colour or home town.

My orientation? On top generally, but being underneath is OK, too.

Wait, you mean preference? Yes, I prefer it.

Sorry. Honest answer, I've been married 31 years, so I guess "any way I can get it" is the most appropriate.

Ahh - Ok - so anyone who has ever ever been offended by any insults, derrogatory terms, racism, homophobic language etcetc. The blame is with the recipient for 'choosing' to be offended. You can't blame someone if they say "**** off you damn ******", or "screw you n*****" - no, you have to blame the recipient for 'CHOOSING' to be offended.

Are you kidding me?

People who says such things do so knowing EXACTLY what their intent, meaning, purpose and offence will be.

Way to jump the bridge a bit.
I've been in a situation myself where I used a word I thought was acceptable only to have it, not so long ago, be reclassified as offensive (even though just slightly).
But I agree it does depend on how you react to it. My family comes from 2 countries that get a lot of crap flung, I've even seen it here on this forum, some by the admins. But it's nothing. If someone called me a sheep shagger, so? Why would I be offended by that? If I'm playing a game online and someone calls me a Limey. Does that have any impact on me? No. Do I enjoy lime in Coca Cola? Yes.

I've always wondered how that works. Is it literally a choice of one or the other, male or female with no odds. Or do you prefer one sex over the other?

When it comes to looks I find women more attractive. But when it comes to relationships I like being with a guy better. But it all depends since it's not always so B/W.
