You can select three models.

my faves were:

iPhone 5S because that’s what introduced touchID, AR, and other great features.
iPhone 6S, because that introduced 3D Touch, 4K video recording, and some other cool features
iPhone X/XS/XR because that’s what started FaceID, front facing portraits, and of course the all screen design

i will say, iPhone has gotten really good over these 15 years. Like Touch ID, Face ID, cameras, iOS, AR, LiDAR, and more like that. What was your favorite model iPhones?

Probably iPhone XR, because so many people here thought the rumor couldn't be true.

We heard ridiculous arguments like "they can't cut a notch in LCD" and "no one would buy LCD." It turned out to be the best selling smartphone around the world in 2019.

More importantly, it was affordable, had Face ID, and a big battery. It was simply what the mass market wanted.

5s

These days between iPhone generations the tech is so close with each other. It’s a slightly better iPhone. But before the 6s generation each gen was a big leaf with big industry changing features. The 5s was FAST! Big different between the 5 vs 5s. Not only did it have the big screen apart from the 4th gen but the Touch ID was truly great feature. Better than the pin and actually secured the phone as it became more integral to our lives (mobile banking and password now secure). I read a study where most iPhone users didn’t use the pin feature risking their data.

Honestly day to day from 8th gen to know you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in speed. Phones are that good.

Absolutely the 3G/3GS form factor! No phone since has felt even remotely close to as good in the hand or in the pocket.

I am using a mini now, which I am fairly happy with, but I would gladly pay thousands for an edge to edge retina OLED with Face ID, a modern SoC and decent camera tech in a 3G body. (Add USB-C, and capability to run macOS with monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to make it perfect!)

People tend to gravitate towards the first year of a new design language, but I think the sweet spot is often the year thereafter. Like the iPhone 12 Pro barely had anything noteworthy beyond the new design, but the 13 Pro now has ProMotion, an entirely new camera system and much a better battery.

I think the 6s (Plus) for me was the first one that was really interesting. It brought so many great features to the iPhone - stronger body that helped to mature the new design, much improved camera wirh 4K recording, 3D Touch, NVME storage, very decent battery life in Plus form.

The 5S was definitely the one to get of that generation for Touch ID alone. However, the 4 introduced retina, which I think is one of the mist significant jumps ever, whereas the 4S “only” brought speed, Siri (meh then and meh now) and a new camera.

You forgot to add the 2016 SE and 2020 SE.
I think the 4 and 6s where the best iPhones for multiple reasons, mostly because these brought the most important and significant changes to the table and weren’t such (giant) let downs like the 7, 8, Xs, 12 and others were.
I’d have voted for the 2016 SE, too, for personal reasons, obviously 😄. Runner up for 3rd place would be the 5s though. Just like the 6s it was the classic “s” upgrade that changed a whole lot without seemingly like so.

I’m not holding my breath for someone voting for the 5c 😂

used to love the X to bits, but ever since I had the 12 I'm happy with that.

I went through
  • 2007 iPhone 2G
  • 2011 iPhone 4s
  • 2013 iPhone 5s
  • 2015 iPhone 6s
  • 2017 iPhone 8 Plus
  • 2019 iPhone 11 Pro Max
I ? 2021 iPhone 13 Pro Max for reasons of
  • largest mAh battery of any iPhone
  • Low power mode that allows me to charge every week rather than every day
  • A15 Bionic
  • 6.7" display
  • 27W fast charging with 0-50% charge in 35 mins & 0-100% charge in 129 mins
  • better camera
  • iOS 15
I charged up the 2007 iPhone 2G & 2011 iPhone 4s and the screen size is suitable for baby hands.

Buyer's remorse
  • didn't get the 2009 iPhone 3Gs
  • didn't get 6s Plus
  • didn't get the 16GB & 32GB models until the 8 Plus 64GB
  • bought Nexus 6P & Essential PH-1 waste of over $1,100

Yeah, I agree that it‘s not necessarily the same for every generation. With the X for instance, I think that was a very good buy while the Xs was only a slight improvement. I do think it applies for the 5/5s, 6/6s, 12/13 generations though, in these it was always the S year that brought the interesting stuff.

Great minds think alike , the 4 for me is still the best iPhone ever . The design , the massive leap over the 3 models . If it had a better camera I’d probably be using it now . ❤️ it . The worst for me was my 8 , it was so slippery and in the end the battery blew up . Only apple device I’ve had a problem with in over 30 years 😂!

3 models ?

4 , 5 and my 13 pro max .

I had a 6 and an 8 and the curvy edges drove me nuts

For me it would be the SE 2016 that I used until January, where I replaced it with a 13 mini. Sadly it’s not on the list. It’s small for todays standards, but still very usable.

2nd place the 13 mini. It’s a solid device but to me as a person who holds on one phone for many years it still has to proof itself.
3rd place goes to the 3GS. That was my first iPhone and it was awesome for the time it came out. If you look at it today it feels ancient, but it still feels perfect in the hand. I used it until the iPhone 5 came out four years later, which replaced my 3GS but never won my heart.

For me it would be the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus, 8 Plus, iPhone X, XS Max, 11 Pro Max, 12 Pro Max and now 13 Pro max. I know choice said 3 but all these I listed are my favorites.

Agree wholeheartedly. I have preferred the S versions. I had the 3GS, the 4S, the SE (the 5SS?), the SE 2020 (the 8S?) and now the 13 mini (12S mini?). I've never regretted waiting the year.

All that said, my favorite iPhone of all time was the 5c.

5S (would be the SE if i had own one), loved the design, size, metal back, flush camera, chamfers. Even after owning a 5 from release, followed by a Nexus 5 for a decent stint, breifly back to the 5 after getting a refurbished unit thanks to the sticky power button replacement program, Sony Z3 Compact for a week, I picked up a second hand 5S.

X, new design, felt fresh and got to a point where I didn't feel the need to constantly change phone. Was my longest owned phone at 2.5+ years.

13 mini, doesn't handle the same as a 5/SE but it fills the small device want. Having the main camera of the 12 Pro Max is a nice bonus, keen to try using it as my only camera when I travel next. Will keep this until there is a drastic change to the iPhone or if there will be a 14 mini which is the 'last'. Not interested in incremental upgrades now, also don't care for 120hz on a phone.

My partner still uses her SE 2016, though I believe she plans to update to either the 13 mini, SE 2020 or (assuming it exists) SE 2022. And up until I got my 13 mini last month, my old SE 2016 was still in use by my stepson.

Can't vote, because all the different sizes of a generation are lumped together. ?‍♂️
But currently my vote would go to the 13 mini.
SE? not on list

had a 6 and a 4 before that.. great value all three
Yeah I know. It wouldn’t let me add more than 20 options, so I had to group some of them and remove the SE, and group the sizes. You can choose SE by just typing it or just say the certain size that you like.

I really liked the iPhone 5 and although it wasn’t my first iPhone, it was the one I had when I joined this forum.

The other one that’s a favourite was the iPhone 8+. That thing was flawless and worked so well for the full 2 years I owned it. The battery was on 89% after more than 2 years use and the iPhone 12 I have now is on 86% after just 14 months. Shockingly rubbish by comparison.

SE (2016). It's not on your list.

It was, at launch, every bit as capable as the 13 mini (my 2nd favorite) but came with TouchID instead of FaceID. The 13 mini is a close second, I really like magsafe charging, but there's no reason for the notch and FaceID instead of TouchID is still just obnoxious, even without a pandemic.
