It’s obviously quite half-baked at the moment and Apple knew that going out. They were probably just working more than long enough on it and needed to put it out there in the hopes of creating an app-ecosystem. I’d ecpect them to be in it for the long game, so I wouldn’t declare it dead until it’s at least in it’s 3rd generation. If it hasn’t picked up speed by then, then it’s probably dead (and Tim Cook will also have retired by then, as they won’t bring out a new one every year). Remember, the “pro” stands for “prototype”.

The return rates are rumoured to be sky high. This is likely to stop any launch in the UK or Europe where consumer rights are much stronger than in the USA.
Actually, that 2 week return window usually only applies to the standard configurations outside of the US, so no returns for BTO options with the bigger SSD or for the Zeiss inserts.

I was panned on here for rightfully declaring the Vision Pro DOA (dead on arrival) a few weeks ago.

A lot of the pushback was on the fact it hadn’t actually released yet.

Well now it has, and my two year prophecy is already looking generous!

The reviews are, on the whole, poor.

It’s time to be brave and answer the inevitable question now of when, not if, we call time of death.
I’m pretty unenthusiastic about the Vision Pro and face computers in general, but calling this platform dead any time soon is a dumb move. Apple invested too much money in this to let it die, they’ll pivot the hell out of it to try make back their R&D money before they ever let it fail.

I firmly believe that this form factor is never going to get to anything close to iPhone or even iPad levels of adoption, but I also remember what a train wreck the first Apple Watch was and how quickly Apple turned that around.

I’d wait until a few more hardware iterations have come and gone before making any sweeping declarations.

Haha this poll is just plain stupid, why are there only this colored options?

If you don’t see it, don’t like it, we don’t care.

Why is the Vision Pro a product where all the not buyers think they have to make us buyers believe it’s not worth it?

Just don’t buy it. The world is not that hard.

The vision pro is the future.

You will see.

They will all see.
Not there yet, but it looks that way. Spatial computing, ability to Mirror to MBP could be huge. I am not gonna buy gen 1 but very interested in gen 2, when Apple tweaks AVP.

I'm going to go 2+ years when they realise they couldn't mass produce this on scale at a low enough price for the masses to get. This needs to go from "thousands of dollars" to the "hundreds of dollars" range.
I don’t see how this is possible unless Apple comes with something like Google glass, which was a disaster. The number of screens, components inside AVP will be hard to get to hundreds of dollars. I can see something in 1500-2500 range.

I’ll be SHOCKED if we get a v3 of this. We’ll get a v2 MAYBE if it’s already in the pipeline.

This will be ignored by Apple just like the Mac Pro. 5 years from now it will be a “remember the Vision Pro?” trivia topic.

Apple needs to put all their effort into AI and just can this thing. It’s a waste of their time and money honestly. It will NEVER have mass market appeal. People don’t want to wear stuff on their head around like this all day.

If 3D glasses for TV never took off, there’s no way this will. There still isn’t any super compelling marketing beyond “you can watch immersive movies!”.

Please just focus on health features for the watch, improving the iPad, working on AI to fix Siri, and most useful EVERYDAY products that are realistic. I’d rather wear Apple shoes that can automatically check my weight, gate, blood pressure, balance, etc than some VR glasses to watch Crapatar in 3D again.

Are you talking about doctors calling time of death while wearing a Vision Pro?
Your grandmother lays dead on the bed. The doctor strolls in hitting the griddy with the apple VR set on. He finger flicks some windows around before looking at her. His weird uncanny valley eyes on the display look elsewhere as he addresses you.

Apple is in this for the long haul. Early reviews mostly describe it as a device that can produce absolutely amazing experiences, with some shortcomings and kinks (especially in terms of comfort/weight). As Apple develops the software and OS, irons out kinks, and develops something lighter and more affordable that can produce similar experiences, LOTS of people are going to be clamoring to get their hands on one of these.

Also, there's no evidence that return rates are sky high. We don't have data, but most anecdotal evidence says otherwise (and a lot of the returns seem to be youtubers who only picked the AVP up to make videos about it): https://appleinsider.com/articles/2...return-rate-on-apple-vision-pro-is-pretty-low

Apple is going for the future in a new strategy, as this is unlike AAPL to risk on new technologies. The Vision Pro as a large device will not last long, but that doesn't mean the technology will not be the future of computing on the Apple platform. I do believe we will have something whether it's an ear piece with glasses or contacts that allow us to interact in augmented and virtual reality. The thing is the technology is not ready.

I own a Vision Pro and it's amazing for a few things, like recording and reviewing videos of family moments are unbelievably real. The thing is there need to be apps and accessories that drive demand. I believe AAPL has gone the wrong way for years with tech devices, and Vision Pro is a chance to show Apple can innovate for the future.

"Too early to say…"
Zhou Enlai *

I do think though that Tim Cook has nailed his colours to the mast with this one, so he will sink with it or sail into the sunset with it, but it will never ever be acknowledged as a failure by Apple Inc. Even the refurb store will be managed. Rather warehouses full of returns than acknowledge the returns.

Someone mentioned the iPhone Mini. I actually think that's quite apt.
It will have a small but vocal dedicated fanbase that will be disappointed as it is left to wither or get (What's the MacRumours' editors favourite phrase?) sunsetted (gaaaargh!) in a few years.

Or not.

* Alas, that myth has been debunked.

If you have bought a Vision Pro and decided its not for you then thats cool. Share your experiences in a constructive way to help others who might be in a similar situation form an opinion of whether the AVP is for them or not.

If you've had the demo and don't like it, tell us why so others can also share their opinions.

But don't make blanket statements about something if you have never even used it before.

The AVP is like electric vehicles - a niche product for the rich, except they aren't forcing the AVP on us like they are EVs.

I think the Vision Pro in its current iteration is dead and will be left for a number of years. You'll see articles in a few years talking about how long it's been since it was updated, will Apple ever make another one etc. Ala HomePod.

I don't think Apple is done with VR though. It's clear it works really well for some things, and VR will gradually be more accepted in public.

I think where this goes is a strategy reset and a regular 'Vision' headset being launched in 2 years which has been aggressively cost cut and is marketed as a companion to your existing devices rather than a stand alone computer you spend you day in.

OF COURSE it won't die.

Same predictions were written for the iPod and the Apple Watch.

Does this mean this Gen 1 is worth buying right now? I don't know. But by gen 3 or 4 you guys will have a collective a-ha moment when every second people on the plane will wear one.

I think a strong clue will be whether Apple launch internationally in the next 6 months or so….

Costs in the US are high…but Europe and UK will typically be higher (as is the case with other Apple products). £4k or €4k+ starting prices are a really tough sell….

No international launch in 2024 would be a strong indication that Apple is having a rethink.

These forums are just too brutal on for AVP! They've spent countless hours away from their families and hundreds of millions if not billions in attempting to advance our computing world and all we do is pick it apart!

I think we need to cut them some slack 😬

Maybe we should turn this question around. OP, is there a criteria that, if met, you would concede the AVP is not yet dead?
  • if it's still being sold?
  • if it's introduced into additional markets?
  • if a new version is announced?
Your initial assertion strikes me as pretty vague. To use your words, it's "time to be brave" and flesh out what you mean.
