my desktop and all browser windows have a polarized/negative effect on and i cannot disable!
 
Check System Preferences > Universal Access, and see if Display is set to "White on black".

(I think you mean "posterized", not polarized...)
 
humm...had the same thing like a year ago or so. went to the store, and they tested it, and realized that the all screen had just died, the pixels blowed it up, connect it to an external monitor and check if it get's the normal display kind of colours

I'd press control option command 8 first to see if you have it swapped in the Assisted Access control panel first.

Here's hoping it's just that! :)
