We blurred out the logo for trademark issues. So, no it is not a Chinese ripoff. Don't worry.

Oh...so it was Photoshopped® digitally edited as apposed to physically covered? I thought I was doing pretty good there for a second... :p

It's also kind of big for a guy's keychain. And on the kid? How long before it breaks or gets lost?

On a pet's collar seems reasonable however, and Lord knows some people are willing to spend huge amounts on their pets. If I were forced to sell this product that's what I'd concentrate on.

I've known a few with massive 30-40+ key keychains, I can't imagine something like a dongle would bother them much more. I can't imagine hanging it from an ignition switch though.

For a kid, it could easily be built into a watch or the like and easily made waterproof. The components are pretty simple and wouldn't break easily. Furthermore they require extremely little battery so keeping it charged likely wouldn't be an issue.* Keep in mind also that is really less for "paranoid parents that can't sleep unless Jimmy is in his bed" and more for kids with mental disabilities who can be unpredictable or have a tendency to wander (see also: people with Alzheimer's dementia, and, as you've mentioned previously, pets).

If you lost it...well it has GPS, doesn't it?

I can't imagine how you'd secure it to the back of a laptop without damaging it (or having it just fall off), but I could see someone using a customized bracket for mounting into the second hard drive slot. I don't know if this exists already.

*A digression: You could possibly leverage Bluetooth LE a lot when in range of another paired device (instead of relying on GPS all the time) to save battery, which would probably work well if it has a signal. A device that charged passively with motion would be neat, but I'm not sure how well it would work in practice (for this purpose). I don't know if POM does either of these, but it may be worth looking into for specific purposes. I also don't know how much power a simple GPS signal uses or if it is less power than Bluetooth LE (I suspect it would).

Why don't people just be more attentive to their children, lock their pool gates, etc? This is a more elegant and cheaper solution.

You got kids? I've been looking for something like this for 3 years now. It literally takes 1 second for my kid to vanish in a store. I will be bying this.

Thanks for all the comments on our product. Yes, it is my Macbook Pro. 2012 version for those that care ;)

What makes our Total POM better than Tile is the 300+ foot range, replaceable battery, GPS and Cellular tracking capabilities and the ability to sync it to your POM Link which gives you 24/7 monitoring of any location (such as your home or office) even if you are not there. Tile is great for keeping track of your keys. We're perfect for helping you keep track of things that really matter like your kids or your pets.

Thanks for the support Mac Rumors. We appreciate it.

Can I set a geofence radius around my phone to be alerted when POM is outside the geofence radius I set?

This would be great to keep track of children in stores or crowded places.

Thanks.

There are dozens of Kickstarter projects for devices just like this that have been funded.

Keep in mind that more then 80% of Kickstarter projects that are fully funded are not delivered on time and a large percentage of them are never delivered at all. That's what you get when you go with people that have never actually gone through the product production process before and don't understand the challenges or have help to navigate that process. Realistically, if their ideas are decent, they could easily go the normal route and work with a product development company to bring the product to market. Seems they'd rather increase the chance of failure and do it themselves.

I'd be willing to buy one without any electronics inside; it'd be pretty hard to lose anything with something that obtrusively ugly stuck to it. :p

Pretty neat and good for security. I can't wait for similar things to become cheaper. There should be an option to encrypt/decrypt location data with a key that only the user stores in his brain. For car security, it's a lot better than hiding the least valuable GPS-capable iPhone possible in the car when parking. :D Actually I don't know why a "smart car alarm" isn't mainstream by now, but now that "smart" stuff is finally a trend, it could happen.

Attaching it to kids also sounds hilarious. Seriously though, my dog might need this.

I can understand small Bluetooth tile based products that attach to keys etc that you may lose around the home but I don't understand why you would ever attach a tracker like this to your laptop or require GPS? I'm trying to imagine a scenario where I would benefit from sticking one of these to my laptop. If it were stolen then the thief would simply remove the tracking device wouldn't he/she? Is it possible lose a laptop in your home?

I guess you might leave your bag on the train with a laptop on it and you could chase it across town/country.

I guess as the tech improves and the devices get smaller and cheaper them you could conceal/hide them on everything from kids/cars/wives/bags/keys and have some fun but as long as they are immediately visible half of the utility is gone.

Wow that looks like crap. Hopefully not the final design.

Good luck to them though. These things can come in handy.

Yes, you can set a geofence

Yes, that is one of the best functions of this tag. We are creating bracelets specifically for kids so this is a more feasible option. I know how finicky kids are about clothing items, so we are actively testing the perfect options for kids.

One year later and they still haven't delivered on any of their products, but changed their delivery date to 2016?!?! Is this another crowdfunded Bluetooth device scam?

Or maybe not "scam" but people having no idea about Bluetooth and GPS tech, thinking they can have the manufacturer (in China) develop to their unrealistic specs - which all of the media has publicized as achievable (as with this article).

Would love to hear what the status is...
