I had the 17" but ended up downgrading to the 15". While I loved the screen res of it, I hated the size of it. I'm a college student so I bring my mbp everywhere. The weight wasn't an issue at all but just the size of it meant that I couldn't randomly sit somewhere and pull it out. I found myself trying to not use my computer because it would be too much of a hassle to pull in and out. Thus, I went to the 15". I still miss the resolution of the 17" but I got the high res 15" and it's ok ...

I know I chime in on most of these threads, but there aren't that many 17" owners so you take what you can get!

I'm also a student who takes his computer literally everywhere. I never find that it's too big to pull out, but I don't use it on places like subways or busses or anything, that's what the iPhone is for, lol. I love my 17" and I use it all around the house/in bed to browse and what not. It didn't take too much getting used to because I've always had 17" laptops, so by comparison the MBP is a dinky little thing . It always fits in my lecture theatre seats and I use it in pretty crowded coffee shops and the most noteworthy thing that happens is fellow geeks coming up and checking out my computer. I'm not joking, that actually happens :p.

I would be the one to tell them to "****** off"

Well I have the 17 inch and would not have any other size. I just love the large screen. I carry it everywhere with me and it's definitely not too large or heavy. I'm no wimp so a couple of pounds doesn't faze me.

I will be tempted to buy the new 17 inch Macbook Air that is coming out around Christmas depending on its specs. I like the Airs but the screen size is just too small. I am so happy that Apple is making a 17 inch Air. I just hope they beef it up and and not tear it down.

i know right? a 17" air seems kinda redundant... plus where would you put a battery big enough for that size LCD?

sure it won't weigh anything but it's still big surface area... and for it's size, the 17" is quite light to begin with.

Wha wha whaaat?

Do you have a link?

I've been wishing for a 17" MBA since the moment I started using my 11" MBA.

I think he means Apple's assumed plans to "Air-ise" the MacBook Pro line. ie, thinner, solid state storage, and no optical drive. It's a logical progression, but it is still just a rumour.

On topic, the 17" MBP is fantastic. I commute with mine, and often use it on the train, often for over an hour. Even when there's someone sitting next to me. And as the problem with using notebooks on the train is the required elbow position to type with it on your lap, I'm confident a 17" MBP is no more difficult to use on the train than an 11" MBA. But you will be more productive with the extra screen space.

A 3kg weight is a small price to pay for a beautiful, antiglare 1920x1200 res screen.

This all sounds good but what just made the 17" in negative to me is the problems it MAY be having with the Sata 3 SSD cards. I find it kind of ridiculous for a laptop that a person would get with hopes to upgrade storage if needed

Well. I've decided for now to stick with the air and desktop. With the air costing $987 I'll use it for a bit and see what comes in the next 6-8 months.

Thank you all for the feedback!
