Poor Frame Rate on MacBook Air using VGA

Had my new MacBook Air connected to an 720p HD TV using an HDMI cable which worked fine, but moved TV into living room and plugged a VGA monitor in and I must say that while running under either Snow Leopard or Windows 7 through Boot Camp, the frame rate suffers, which is a problem when it comes to gaming! :S

I've searched the net and found nothing on this. Can anyone help?
