I've been using Apple TV 2 for streaming musing from iOS devices for years. After upgrading my iPhone to 10.2, the sound quality became quite poor when using AirPlay from the Music app: there is constant stuttering. But if I connect to AppleTV from the Control Center with Mirroring, so that the screen is mirrored to, the sound quality is fine, which seems counter-intuitive to me. I would expect that Mirroring streams more data, so if there is any issues with the wifi network, they would be more apparent when Mirroring. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the settings on the Apple TV or the iPhone.

A related question: can I expect better sound quality with the latest Apple TV compared to Apple TV 2 if I keep the same network setup?

I'm also having issues with AirPlay Mirroring from my 2016 MacBook Pro: video is basically unplayable. At the same time, streaming video from an older MacBook Air works fine. Which again me wonder if upgrading Apple TV can help.

Thanks

When you use mirroring, audio and video is highly compressed. OTOH when you use AirPlay audio is uncompressed lossless 44.4khz 16bit PCM and It consumes around 150KBytes per second of bandwidth.

So, I wouldn't be so sure about mirroring using more bandwidth than AirPlay, It could be just the opposite. BTW you can check that by yourself opening Activity Monitor -> Network tab.

PS: looks like a WiFi problem to me...
