With 3D Touch, I could press into a notification on the lock screen and it would pop out and let me interact with it. It was useful for a quick sport highlight or to respond to a message. I had thought on the XR that a simple long press would give me the same thing. However it appears that I can’t interact with any notifications. Is that the case or is there a setting that I’m missing?

Nope, your not missing anything. That’s what you get without 3D Touch. You can try swiping left to see more options.
