clicking a link does it

MOSR and others are able to launch popups when you follow a link on their sites because Safari tries to allow a user to click links for popup windows for stuff like banking logins where it would be useful behavior.

When you find a site that's (ab)using this:
I've found that if you right-click and copy the link, then paste it into the address bar and hit return (instead of just clicking the link to go to the page), you avoid the popups at MOSR among others.

macfixit has a story as well:

Yesterday, in our Mac OS X 10.3.8 coverage, we noted a few reports of users seeing pop-up ads in Safari since installing the 10.3.8 Update, even though Safari's "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is enabled. Since then we've been buried by reader confirmations of such issues -- one of the most overwhelming responses to a specific issue we've ever had. Based on those responses, as noted below, we've moved this topic into its own article. As we'll explain, the problem appears to be only coincidentally related to OS X 10.3.8 and is not isolated to Safari.

Macosrumors.com has recently been getting pop-ups and the administrators have posted this message:

On the advertising front: as long as "break-through" pop-up exploits exist in popular browsers like Safari and Firefox, and the major ad networks allow such exploits to be used outside the control of the publisher

So I guess new code will have to be written for browsers to block these new, more advanced pop-ups.

www.rnc.com does it for me. Consistently (I use Safari). Went there with mistaken URL, but thought I'd post back here.
Firefox takes care of whatever rnc is trying to open...

My altered hosts file kills many, many ads in ALL browsers - popups, pop-unders, banners, flash ads, ads with sound, etc. All I need to do is keep it up to date. The only bad thing is that it takes a little longer for all browsers to start cold because they have to load and cache the hosts file.

I don't kill Google ads because I like those and I'd actually WANT to click one :)

Just so you guys know (those who don't) sometimes a popup will popup because a user has invoked it such as, as soon as a page loads, if the document is loaded, then open a new window. So its like saying the user invoked it after the page loaded up. Its strange how they do it, but they can invoke it a hundred different ways so it'll show up. A lot is caused by ActiveX controls.
