Hi,

I just set up my M5 Max with 128 GB of RAM and noticed something strange that I did not have on my M1 Max. When I start compiling software or put the GPU under load, about 20 seconds later I hear a small pop or crackle noise. It happens once or twice, then does not happen again for the rest of the workload. It isn’t loud and you can only hear it in a quiet room.

If I stop the process for around 30 seconds and start it again, the noise comes back about 20 seconds later, even though the computer has not cooled off.

Has anyone else seen this, and do you think it is worth swapping out? I would rather not replace it since a new one would take about three weeks. Can you hear this on your machine if you put your head close to the computer?

I also hear some coil whine, but that part does not really worry me.

is it possible it's the fan squeaking from starting to spin up? I have a similar issue on my M3 Max when I do coding with a local model, I hear a weird sound when I start doing something intense, either coil whine or fan spinning up

I’m experiencing this issue as well. Mostly noticed when exporting in DaVinci Resolve.

That Happened to my first M4 Max, You are still within your RETURN Period. RETURN ASAP !!!

Popping sounds does happen on M1 Max as well. Usually starts when Xcode is open, with SwiftUI previews, constantly compiling changes. It helps to terminate coreaudiod process. It will restart, and issue is gone. It is SW bug.
