Popping sounds from speakers

my 27" iMac makes a single popping sound that comes from the speakers about once every 3-5 minutes. It sounds a lot like the sound when someone IMs you on Facebook (no, no one is IMing on Facebook). I hear the sound at regular intervals even though the volume is muted.

Anyone know what might be causing this sound?
