Last year, cartoonist Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal teamed up with Elan Lee and Shane Small to create a card game called Exploding Kittens, which launched on Kickstarter. It received huge amounts of media attention and became the most-backed Kickstarter project of all time, with more than 200,000 backers.

Exploding Kittens started shipping out in July, and as of today, it's expanding to iOS devices with a digital version of the game that's now available for the iPhone. The goal in Exploding Kittens, which can be likened to Russian Roulette, is to avoid the Exploding Kitten cards while attempting to foist them on your opponents.

Players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game -- unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.
On iOS, Exploding Kittens includes local multiplayer gameplay with two to five players across multiple phones, with no option to play across the Internet. Multiple iPhones are able to connect using an ad-hoc network over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to enable gameplay.

The digital version of the game includes exclusive new cards that are not available in the existing print edition, including a new add-on Party deck. At the current time, there are no "Nope" cards, but these will be added in a later update.

To celebrate its launch, all of the in-app card pack purchases within the digital version of Exploding Kittens are available for free for a limited time. Card packs include the aforementioned Party Expansion Pack, an Animals Avatar Pack, and a Food Avatar Pack.

Wait, there aren't any "Nope" cards yet? That's... kind of a big aspect of the game. It's like releasing a monopoly game without the "Jail" feature implemented.

I contacted them during the Kickstarter phase about an iOS port, they said no thanks at the time. I wish they would have gotten back into contact with me to help build it.

Is there a matchmaker to pair you up with strangers?

I wonder how the in-app purchases are going to work. Will everyone in the game session need to have the purchase, or just one person?
 
Could a happy buyer let me (and others) know whether multiplayer is possible with one iPad or only over network?

Edit: oh hang on, it says iPhone. Damn. I need my Exploding Fix.

It says local adhoc network only, so you'll likely be looking at the people you'd be playing with.

Scrabble was like that. worked very well...too bad the app was abandoned.

Also, to the dude who said "damn, iPhone only"...you're aware you can download iPhone apps to your iPad, right?
 
No single player/internet/matchmaker option is...strange. I wonder how many people are buying the game only to find that out too late?

They need to add online support as well as the ability to play a game on a single phone when only one person has the game.
 
I threw it on an old iPhone 4s I had around here to use as a second device to try it out with. It crashed a few times trying to start a game but did eventually get in and was playable. 4s users may be a bit frustrated though. 6s+ worked great.

I'd like to grab them all at the intro offer but I'm not sure how to make that happen. Cute game though, looks like the app still needs some work but I'd think Matthew would push for them to make it better quickly.

Yes, I took me a bit to figure that out as well. It seems a little counter intuitive.

Also, I readily admin that I didn't read closely about local adhoc network only, but I'll hang on to it to see if it gets developed into something more robust.

It looks like a great game.
 
I'm interested in this game for me and my kids. The website says it's age appropriate for 7+. The App Store says 9+.

What's the opinion of actual users. I'm ok with my 10 year old playing, but what about 7 and 5?

In the end, it's only $2, so it's not the end of the world if they don't like it. Also, I'd be supporting the Oatmeal guy who's given me tons of entertainment over the years.

Yes I did. I brought in a graphic artist for the art. But all the code that drives it was done by me. Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoy(ed) it!
