Darkroom, a popular camera app designed for iOS devices, was today updated with a new feature that allows users to edit videos as well as photos.

With the addition of video editing, all of Darkroom's photo editing tools can be used with videos too, for what Darkroom's developers say is a quick, lightweight editing experience.

Videos autoplay and loop, with edits made in realtime, plus there are transitions, no-import workflows, and batch editing for seamless and fast video edits. Existing filters will work on videos, and there is a new premium Cinematic filter pack designed specifically for videos, which offers a range of looks from black and white to teal and orange.

Video editing is a feature that is included in the Darkroom+ subscription option, priced at $3.99 per month, $19.99 per year, or a one-time fee of $49.99. Non-subscribers can test the features and the filters, but won't be able to export edited video without a subscription.

Darkroom swapped to a subscription-based business model for new users back in February, and with this update, is renaming that subscription service to Darkroom+. Darkroom+ provides access to video editing and all of Darkroom's filters and editing tools.

Apologies in advance for my kind of off-topic post, but I'm curious if someone can tell me if I'm missing something...

I saw mention that this app is subscription-based. I go to the App Store and the button which would normally show you the price just shows "GET". The long description, when expanded, mentions the subscription but without pricing info. Scrolling down farther I see that it supports Family Sharing, which is good. Scrolling up/down some more I see a drop-down for "In-App Purchases" which says "Yes" but with a drop-down arrow. Tapping that, I see a list of in-app purchase options prefixed with "Legacy" (I'm guessing those may not even be options anymore for new customers?). The last item in that list is the Yearly Subscription which lists a price of $19.99.

I don't know how good this app is/isn't (reviews are very good, but the video editing feature is brand new, so most of those reviews are based on the photo editing capabilities). I actually don't have a problem with subscription pricing if the app is great and the subscription price is reasonable. I'm mostly just posting this to say that I think Apple needs to revamp their App Store UI to better highlight the subscription pricing, what you do/don't get with various In-App purchase options, etc. As it stands now, it seems like it requires too much work to find out the details pre-download. Some developers (I'm not accusing this developer of being one) actually go out of their way to be sneaky about it, and try to trick you into subscribing, giving you a free trial, etc., and hoping you won't notice when the auto-pay kicks in on the subscription.

Hey there, I'm the cofounder and CEO of Darkroom. I realize this may be confusing, but unfortunately it's a consequence of our transition plan from in-app purchase to subscription (details here).

Since we wanted to offer the new subscription as a free upgrade to users who previously purchased the app, we had to keep around all our old products on the app store, so they can be restored. There's no way for us to transfer a user's purchase from one product to another.

Our compromise was to add "Legacy" to all those products.

I pretty much gave up on this app after SO many silly bugs that persist. The developers do acknowledge the bugs but simply say "we are working on a fix". Which to me shows irresponsible app development process.

There will always be bugs but darkroom has bugs a plenty and it only takes about 5 min for you to run into something annoying. Simple things like edited photos not showing up in the edited category, their photos app extension acting finicky. Really crummy vignette tool that doesn't work properly. Unable to reliably edit a photo if its already been edited/cropped in the apple photos app. Portrait photo editing bugs. (just to name a few)

I sooooo much want to love and support this app/company but as I said. I gave up. I tried again a few months ago with a big update they had....ran into bugs within 5 min. Todays update a buddy tried and also ran into a bug within 5 min.

So much potential that will just never be realized. Apples editing in iOS 13 now gets me through 90 percent of my needs quickly and easily. Darkroom is simply trying to do everything....which it does only mediocre.

Tip to the devs.....strip it back and start fresh, keep it simple. Stop competing with the big boys because its just not working.

P.S. I participated in their beta program a couple years ago so Im not talking out my A** on these issues.

Hey there, the app is free, it has a rich set of free editing and management features (depth editing, raw editing, live photo editing, etc), and you can try all the paid features without making a payment. We only ask you to subscribe when you try to export using any of the premium features.

Hi @jonnyb098, we've talked on twitter about this, and I hope you give Darkroom a try, and I appreciate your passion about this especially given the length of your comment, but if anyone else is reading this, I'd like to point out that Darkroom has carried a 4.8 star rating since launch, is an Editor's Choice app, and is frequently used both by professionals and casual photographers (and now videographers).

We're continuously updating and fixing issues, but we're a very small independent team, so sometimes big fixes take time.

I would absolutely never pay for a subscription of it.
So feed up with these endless subscriptions, utterly annoying.
There was a time you could buy and app and be done with it.
Now they want to stay in your life forever.
It’s almost like they’re punishing you for being so stupid as to go with their app in the first place.
I’m 100% done with subscription based apps.

Hey there, a lot of developers are switching to subscriptions because the previous model was unsustainable for developers like us who want to build professional-grade apps. If we were developing novelty apps, or single-use apps, then we could just keep launching new ones and charging for them once and not maintaining them once they stop selling.

However, that is not what we want to do. We want to maintain professional grade apps that have a smaller audience, we want to stay independent so we don't have to rely on putting ads or selling your data, and as much as we would like to give the app away for free, we have to pay ourselves.

Subscriptions aligns our incentives to keep maintaining apps, and ensures the quality, depth, and vitality of the iOS ecosystem survives. It's our responsibility to make Darkroom worth the subscription, and if you don't feel like it is worth it, we have failed in our mission. However, we have a lot of great updates planned, and we hope you keep an eye out.

I love Darkroom and have since the beginning. I hate subscriptions for most apps as they dont offer the value proposition to support it. I have bought all the options for Darkroom on iPhone and iPad, and was happy to do it. (I dont remember but I think I had to pay twice because the iPad app was in addition to but I could be mistaken). Ive avoided signing up for the sub to this point since feb because I didnt see the value add versus what i had already paid for, but seeing that they are bringing the heat with video now that starts to tip things over for me. I like where things are going.

Yes there are MANY options out there for editing color on photos and videos. Ive tried them almost all and Darkroom is among the best and for me the best UI. Yes there have been some bugs in the past largely for what seems like a transition to a new code base so things got rickety for a while. They've done that now.

Shaping up to actually be worth the 3.99 a month. Ive got a 150 plus apps on my iPhone. and have yearly subs for about 6 of them. (these are non content apps, just software subs) Darkroom looks to be the 7th.

I think the app is worth it... before when it was just one time purchase. I purchased it at $9.99 I think. Now, if you don’t usually edit photos, I don’t think it’s worth the bucks. There’s nothing this app can do that the inapp Photos app editor and VSCO can’t do.

Downloaded the app again.....nice work on the video editing for sure. However, it still doesn’t play nice with portrait mode photos that were edited in the native photos app. And the vignette tool is still busted . I’d love to know what pro photographers think it passes as an acceptable vignette. All it does is darken and saturate the WHOLE PHOTO rather than the edges. And yes we’ve been over this about two years ago and I gave you a very detailed breakdown and comparison of how your tool is busted......and it’s still busted. Also the photos app extension is busted. Go to edit a photo and it just spins saying “loading photo”.

I found all this out within 5 minutes.

Bugs take time to fix you say....I can see that.

Please.....pretty please.....just take a SNOW LEOPARD moment. Pause on features and make the app rock solid.

This genuinely made me chuckle. What do you think is irresponsible? Having bugs? Acknowledging them? Working on a fix?

I haven't tried the app (although I've heard very good things about it) but acknowledging their bugs and working on a fix is the only thing they can do. Sadly, fixes are not always trivial nor immediate, and there might be other things higher on the priority list.

As a business owner I understand subscriptions - they are great for businesses, since it's easy to predict what kind of money is expected in the coming months, quarters and years. That generates stable recurring revenue, which attracts investors and provides financing for updates and new features. MRR is a good number to fly by.

As a customer I sometimes really hate them. The way it works in iOS apps is "pay or it will stop working" which is a total opposite of the classic "pay once and it works forever".

In the past there were no subs and app developers simply released new apps with an incremented version number (like MyAwesomeApp 5) - you had a choice to buy the new one or keep using the old one. That was relatively logical, the developer can't be expected to work for free. Now we are forced to pay fees that are sometimes very hard to understand, or we can use the free product which often does pretty much nothing. Or even worse - we buy an app only to find out it's useless without more money.


Subscriptions aligns our incentives to keep maintaining apps, and ensures the quality, depth, and vitality of the iOS ecosystem survives.

What we really need is a middle ground - pay repeatedly to keep the new stuff coming, but keep access to whatever feature set you had access to when the sub expires.


My company
is a subscription-based one, but once the subscription expires the client can still use the software (but will not receive updates). Instead of twisting the clients arm to force them into keeping the sub out of fear of losing their work, I prefer our product to speak for itself. We are not an iOS app, but I don't see why Apple can't implement that in their store.
