I just don't understand Apple's logic.

Macs are a successful and popular product line up with good profits.
Surely with the literally limitless money Apple has they could just dedicate a group of engineers and designers to keep the Mac lineup up to date?

Half the time all people are wanting is the same thing with the latest silicon inside, it's really not that hard. Yet they just don't seem focused at all. They'd rather invest in TV shows no one wants.

Keep it simple like Jobs said.

Macbook - Macbook Pro
iMac - Mac Pro

...and maybe a Mini as its a great entry level device.

Not too mention their iPad and iPhone lineup has become a bit of a convoluted mess as well.

You can whine all you want but so long as Apple is committed to Intel, and they drag their feet, the Mac will have slow updates. Furthermore we have reached the near end of that wacky law that says power doubles every couple years. The next thing will not be smaller silicon or more coprocessors. It will be quantum computing and cloud computing.

Cloud computing is fractional ownership like Lyft. It is inherently more economical and higher performance. Future macs might have chips, but will act as dumb terminals like on my old PDP-11-70. Adjust to reality.

- Quantum computing does not work like you think.
- With the state of ISPs in the USA you want to rely on cloud computing? No thanks

You're kidding, right? Again, another person taking a small point or factoid (equating posting on a forum with adequate performance), and regardless of truth (or falsehoods) behind it, blowing it up into a false premise so big that they distract the main point? What the hell, do you just think we're dumb? Some of us want a machine that can actually DO THINGS, not just post to forums.
As an Apple Developer and professional in the IT field, I can confidently say that I know what it is like to work with heavy demanding application. XCode is definitely not running fast on my low end three year old MacBook Air. I also do video editing and I know that it takes time to export. But again, don't tell me that you cannot perform your tasks on the current high end MacBook Pro.

First off, many people have HP or Lenovo laptops and have had no problems at all. In fact, I have heard some good things about Lenovo designs. And both make a 17" laptop with an 8th gen core i7 processor. Apple doesn't make either one!
Well, I work with both Lenovo and HP laptops and I can tell you they suck hell. The build quality is horrendous. As in plastic ****. My HP laptop doesn't even sit straight on the table. And once again, fans loud all the time. And they cost more than the price of my sublime MacBook Air.

And if neither HP nor Lenovo float your boat, well at least you can choose from MANY other manufacturers.
Of course, I can select from many subclass companies. But I want the best in technology. And the best in technology is Apple. Period. Compare the Apple Watch to any other worthless wearables. Compare the beautiful iPhone with anything else. Compare the MacBook Pro to any other laptop. This goes on and on.

I could go on all day about broken screen hinges, super-expensive replacement motherboards, inability to add memory after purchase, and inefficient heat shunting designs, just to name a few.
It's been decades that I hear the same old thing over and over again. Do you also complain for not being able to pimp your car's motor?

And Macs aren't even available with a 17" screen size. Any one of those drawbacks would be inexcusable and unacceptable on its own.
Inexcusable and unacceptable...? Apple is having a market value of 928 billion dollars, I would say they do quite well. What's inexcusable is to complain all the time of a company making the best computers on the planet. But if you are not happy about it, go buy a PC and have fun in regedit.

Apple needs to come up to speed or AT LEAST get out of the way and let the people take over. We've got this...
The people. Apple is not a country. It's a company and you are only a customer. And the great thing about customers is that if they are not happy they can go someplace else.
And let me tell you something. If Apple would listen to "the people", the computers would still get a CD drive, a floppy drive, they would sell 20-inch screen laptops as thick as my dick, with the ability to replace the RAM, the processor and the audio card, because hey, we need the best audio quality every time.
Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

The biggest risk to Apple is not in being a design company, but in regressing to just being another boring tech company. Which is apparently what a small but extremely vocal (and influential) portion of the Mac community evidently desires, because they don't want the version of technology Apple is selling, and there is no sign of this dissatisfaction going away.

If regressing to another boring tech company means designing keyboards that don't have twice the failure rate and require 700 dollar repairs off warranty, then...Yes...Please, Apple, become just another boring tech company.

It's like walking into a French restaurant and demanding to be served Japanese cuisine. You want what Apple can't and won't provide. Just because you are willing to throw money at Apple means nothing if it costs Apple more to serve you (and others like yourself) than it will earn them.

Or, maybe it's like walking into a French restaurant that changed its menu to Japanese and being somewhat surprised when you can't get your escargot and the other customers start insinuating you that you are ignorant because you expected it.

What is interesting in that video is the USB-C to USB card reader adapter he had to use, all while having a wifi enabled Camera. Apple stated they removed the SD slot, cause it was cumbersome and people use wifi now to transfer. I couldn't agree more with the article. Apple is slipping hardcore. More and more people are looking back to PC's for the ports, plugs and things they don't want a dongle for.
Didn't even realise this until now, how ironic. Apple is trying to move away from what was perfect (regular usb ports, SD card slot & hdmi etc) just to try and make extra bucks on the damn dongles, meanwhile making it very annoying for the customers that buy them.
It's sad seeing the MacBooks with features that worked so well being killed off and replaced with dongles and the gimmicky touch bar. For these reasons I will stick with my 2015 Air with all the ports I need for every day use. Hopefully technology will advance so everything can be wirelessly accessible or Apple will have to re-think removing all their ports from the MacBooks & iPhones.

There is no reasoning with you, your mind is as closed as Apples eco system. That is okay, it is your right and opinion no matter how wrong it is.

Removing the glowing logo is also frustrating.

There is really no hardware that differentiates today's Macs from any other computer. It used to be Apple had the magnetic power connector, glowing Apple logo, just the right number of ports, proper sized trackpad, etc. But now it is just about screwing the Apple buyer by charging a premium price for run-of-the-mill hardware with essential functionality missing.

Apple should just start certifying macOS on regular PCs. They are no longer a computer company. The ad "Whats a computer?" tells you everything you need to know about today's Apple strategy. No networking equipment, no displays, etc. means no loyalty, because there is no ecosystem.

Don't blame Intel, Dell keeps coming out with great hardware, HP keeps coming out with hardware, hell even Microsoft is coming out with great hardware. I'm in the same boat, Apple abandoned me.

Have tried to stay current using Hackintoshs but to be honest, Mac OS is starting to get full of bugs and the possible switch to proprietary ARM will be a deal breaker. I'm not saying that Windows is any better (automatic updates rebooting your machine!), but as a developer/creator, I just want good tools.

How can one of the wealthiest companies in the world, built around the image of creativity, abandon its core users?
[doublepost=1529104782][/doublepost]

Thank maybe they should have added 0.5mm more and made the damn things work. Novelty concepts like touch bar are not enough value to "delay" and saving 0.5mm is not enough value to lose valuable interfaces (sd slot, usb-a)
[doublepost=1529104914][/doublepost]RIP Apple / Apple Computer. Time to reincorporate to Apple Phone Company Inc.

@MacRumors you should probably rename your site to iphonerumors.com

Sadly, I don't think we are the core users anymore...

Where is Steve Jobs when you need him? I feel like it's dejavu when Steve was out of the loop a long time ago and apple boards begged him to come back and bring Apple back up. Well, his spirit may be dwindling in this modern day? Maybe got too comfortable wish so much cash for the company? They said they were just close to becoming the first trillion dollar company in the world, right?

Honestly, I think this current situation started with Steve Jobs. Let me explain:

2007: Steve Jobs announces that Apple will drop the word "Computer" from the name, becoming "Apple Inc." He knew back then that they were going to start de-emphasizing computers.

2009: Steve Jobe announces the first MacBook Air, which emphasized form over function (first gen Macbook Air was not good).

2010: Steve Jobs announces the first iPad and talks about the "post-PC" era. People didn't realize he also meant Macs.

I just see this sad state of affairs as a continuation of something Steve started.

I agree, however, my 2008 Mac Pro is still the beast I go to when I want to crunch some SERIOUS data. My 2012 MacBook Pro cant keep up even with that. Were there a new beast of a Mac Pro out there.. (Not that silly little round thing) I would buy it Immediately.

Well I was given some Dell servers, 2 socket 4 cores each running at 2.66Ghz, 64GB memory, hardware raid controller, dual power supply, 6 drives, built in dual 10 Gbps ethernet. They must be 10 years old, but are technically more advanced than any of Apple's currently selling computers.

Why? I believe that Apple just no longer has the engineers to create great hardware and management only wants throwaway, glued together, plastic hardware that has to be replaced every 3 years.

And before you reply, no I do not expect Apple to make server class hardware. But when I can get scrap hardware that outperforms Apple's current retail offerings for free, Apple is not going to get my money.

I'll no longer be buying Apple hardware outside of the iPhone and guess what, Apple could care less.

Of course. My point is not about the actual components. People need to understand that there's an elephant in the room. And the elephant is the merger of hardware and software. macOS being developed purely for the Mac hardware, the results is far more powerful than any other worthless computer joint with overly complex Windows.
As for the components, 100% of the computers I've worked with at work (and some very high end) ended up after not even a year with an overly loud fan running loudly almost all the time. That's just one small example out of many.
I would get offered any type of PC for free, I would not even accept it. I would prefer my 2015 MacBook Air with the low resolution than any $3,000 brand new PC.

Once you go Mac, you never go back. So what I want to say to Apple is... thank you. I would not imagine a world without Apple.

trust me I went Mac and went back. that quote is as out of date as your computer. And sure, if you demand nothing of your computer except light usage, they are perfect. But then you honestly don't see the bigger picture. Me personally, I wouldn't be able to achieve anything with your old MB air. I do have an ultraslim Macbook for light usage, and its a great machine for what it is, but it ends there...sadly.

I am an admitted lurker. I have followed this web site since 2005, when I bought my first mac, but never signed up or posted. This thread hits close to home for me and I feel I need to chime in.

I am disappointed in Apple's commitment to the traditional computing product line. It was the 2005 mac mini that convinced my to convert from Windows and Linux. It was a great computer with an OS that had everything I wanted. I was able to do my geek things through open-source software and the command line yet still have a great GUI and access to main stream applications. I have since updated with several Minis, MBPs and a MBAs, Airports, Apple Displays, and AppleTVs for the family. We even jumped on board with iPads and iPhones. We love how well everything works together and that there was a good solution for almost all of our needs. Even though we have iPads and iPhones, we still mostly use our Mac computers for our computing needs. Computers just have a more efficient user interface from complex tasks. A keyboard, mouse and large display easily beat out a touch screen, even with a BlueTooth keyboard.

Slowly, the product line has been decimated. I miss the convenient setup and management of multiple airport extremes. I miss the 1 cable connection to my Apple Display that had all other connections I needed in the back. It meant that I only needed to connect 1 thunderbolt cable and the power cable to my laptop when I started working at my desk and I didn't need a bunch of dongles taking up space on my desk. I have had to move to other brands for networking and displays and they do not integrate as well as the old Apple solutions. I have desperately needed to update several of our Minis but I have not felt comfortable with purchasing a Mini since 2012 because of the hardware compromises. The only compelling feature is the OS. Other hardware such as the Intel NUC is far more capable and a fraction of the cost, but not as polished. I need to update our MBPs but I do not feel comfortable with the current ones. They need more memory and more reliability. I am put off by the keyboard problems, loss of magsafe connector and ports. I miss the larger screen size of the 17" MBP. It makes a big difference for doing work away from my desk. I was in the market for a powerful desktop computer but the newish Mac Pro is outdated and not upgradeable and I can't justify the expense for the performance.

Initially I was really reluctant to buy music and movies iTunes because I feared getting locked into a proprietary digital eco-system. After buying a few albums on iTunes that were hard to find CDs, I soon was buying all my music and started buying movies from iTunes. It was awesome how we could easily view all our media on any of our devices.

Apple successfully wooed me into their digital eco-system but have since lost my trust. I am not buying music and movies through iTunes any longer. With the way they have treated their computer line, I do not trust they won't do the same to their entertainment media system (maybe they will start with dropping support for iTunes on Windows). I am migrating away from apple digital solutions to OS neutral solutions so I am free to purchase purchase whatever hardware meets my needs (computers, phones, tablets).

With the exception of the MacBook Air, I don't think the Mac line-up is as messy as say the iPhone or iPad line-up. Take away the MacBook Air you have a fairly simple line-up catering three computer categories.

Desktop:
Mac Mini and Mac Pro

All-in-One:
iMac and iMac Pro

Notebook:
MacBook and MacBook Pro

The real issue is lack of updates in the desktop category but we know at least one of those will come in the next 12-18 months. I can actually see Apple replacing the Mac Mini with a new 'Mac' desktop unit along side the new Mac Pro to further simplify the line-up.

Anything un-released and un-rumored doesn't exist and you shouldn't wait for it. I sat on that bench waiting for years, the only time they came through was with the imac 2012, after waiting for 2-3 years with my previous iMac, that was a refreshing thing to see. After that, I gave up the waiting game, very few updates and very little innovation on the computer market and no insight and way to plan my purchases. ...a pro machine, something you pay 5000++ for is not something you want to gamble with, without knowing if you can get a better machine one month from now or not...Apples surprise game is fun for consumer products but not for professional hardware. And most of what is released are imo badly designed devices (mbp, imac pro...)

So you are saying you are not able to do your work on the latest MacBook Pro? How many pixels will be enough? Do you need 1 billion pixels for your wallpaper? Opening Photoshop takes 5 seconds on my 2015 MacBook Air with only 4 GB of RAM...

...We are so used to have our components changing all the time that we don't understand that computers are mature now. This is not 1995. And one day, it will be the exact same thing with the iPhone, you'll see. And people will complain, because that's what they do. On my side, I deeply love Apple, as the best company on Earth and by a wide margin.
Computers are mature, but some of us still have a need for hardware improvements. Why are you trying to impose your will on those of us who simply want more capability?

I still have an iPhone 6+ because I'm still waiting for a good reason to upgrade. But I'm not out there telling other people they shouldn't upgrade because "phones are mature now". Sheesh!

I dunno. How about ANYTHING related even remotely to VR?
Right; you're so right! And how about anything related even remotely to 3D art and animation?

Why do the Apple apologists keep insisting that we want too much? We just want to be able to do the new things!

I gave up on Apple’s outdated computers a year ago and it’s worked out well. PCs are frequently updated and far more powerful and innovative. Mac OS is still better than windows, but not better enough to justify paying about 20-30% more for old hardware that Apple just doesn’t seem interested in. Who knows? Maybe Apple sees the future more in self driving cars and AR/VR and that’s where the effort is going.

My mobile devices are all still Apple, since the company still cares about that lineup.
I'm like you. I run Windows PCs with Windows 10 because they are fitted with modern hardware (which allows me to DO MORE), and are reliable and secure, and because Apple hasn't even tried to do that.

Sounds like grandma needs to avoid porn sites. 20yrs windows user and never been infected. Since win10, windows defender has replaced the need for a separate security.
Okay, that made me laugh. But in that person's grandma's defense, it's possible that she just went to her Yahoo account.

So why do you care? Windows is working great for you both professionally and private. Why care what Apple do?
Yes, Windows is working great for me. But I'd have a Mac if Apple would get with the times. A Mac might be better for me if Apple would have not allowed the hardware landscape to become so barren. And a Mac could also run Windows, so I could have the best of both worlds. Why are you trying to chase me away from Apple?

As a software developer I found myself waiting for new hardware for a long time now. My old 2010 machine should have been replaced 4 years ago but as weak as the line up is I got no insensitive to change except my hardware is start failing me. My guest is that I will switch to Windows 10 with Linux subsystem. Dual boot with Linux Gentoo. Maybe get a used mac mini to deploy iOS port, but I’m seriously start thinking to drop iOS support, always have been a pain in the a$s to support it anyway. The current state of OS X is so buggy and the drop of OpenGL is the end for me, no cross platform dev tools will be the end of me on OS X. It was a nice ride, but it’s time to move on. Good bye Mac, like it but no more care about it.

And THIS is why Apple should be treating this like a 5-alarm fire. When your devs begin to leave you, this should be considered an emergency.

Opening Photoshop takes 5 seconds on my 2015 MacBook Air with only 4 GB of RAM. I imagine it's faster on the new MacBook Pro. Is five seconds too much? Producing music, creating Websites, filling out spreadsheets, what is so fancy that you physically cannot do on the latest brilliant MacBook Pro?
This always comes down to this. What is the such brilliant task that cannot be performed greatly on the latest models? Who cares about the family of the processor. It could be called Celeron or i12, at the end it is about the interaction with the computer. That's why we never change our television sets. Because it performs as advertised. I press a button and I can watch tv. I don't care about anything else. That's also why we don't exchange our speakers every year. I press a button and then I can listen to my music on the same big and beautiful speakers that I have since I am a child. Do we need to change our couch and bed and glasses every year? Should I exchange my guitar each year?

You really seem so blinded with your own personal needs that no wonder you cannot see beyond apples eco system.
Do you really think the seconds to open Photoshop is what matters??
Some people actually do more in photoshop than opening small jpegs.
Personally I frequently work with images with up to 100 layers and 15000px width. You think you can even open them on a 4gb ram machine? No! and it would be impossible to work with! I used to have a 2012 iMac retina, top of the line BTO, much more powerful than the MB air you have with 32gb of ram. Saving an image of that size could take up to 30 minutes, and even crash. While on my current machine it takes about 3-4 minutes. Also don't get me started on the other stuff I do, like After Effects and 3d rendering in particular. Having 16 cores of 4ghz CPU actually matters. Probably an image I would render on my current machine which takes an hour, would take days!!! on your machine. Do you still think an outdated Apple laptop would suffice for everyone, then you seriously have nothing to contribute to this discussion.

Its not about pixels on the screen or how fast a program can open at all. Its how fast the machine can compute large amount of data in a short time.

Jobs said to W. Mossberg that PC computers (including Macs) will be like trucks. I understand this in such a way that computers will be for serious tasks, and hence, will be stronger, practical and used by fewer people. Perhaps they will be more expensive. For the rest, simplified devices such as the iPad are enough.

But ... the current Apple Mac product line are not a trucks, they are a small pick-ups with engines from small urban cars. In my opinion, this is not the direction that Jobs had in mind.

Next time try to buy an Elitebook or a Thinkpad X1, not a consumer piece of crap, yes?

go buy a PC and have fun in regedit.

You seem to be mixing up "buying a PC" and "installing Windows" and recycling obsolete Windows memes from 1995.

If Apple would listen to "the people", the computers would still get a CD drive, a floppy drive, they would sell 20-inch screen laptops as thick as my dick, with the ability to replace the RAM, the processor and the audio card

The only actually useless part is the floppy drive ever since USB drives came along.
I wouldn't exactly complain about the ability to replace the RAM or to buy a 17" MacBook Pro (you tell me whether your dick is 0.98 inches in diameter).

Alas, Apple is listening to "the people".

"The people" (i.e. the general public) mostly want ultrathin, throwaway crap; you can tell because they're voting with their dollars.

Computers are mature, but some of us still have a need for hardware improvements.

Computers have been "mature" for quite a while, it's true, but there are very many industries in which the equation more instructions per second = more ROI will never cease to be true.

Once you go Mac, you never go back.

Actually I went Mac, then back in 1999, then Mac again in 2003, then back again in 2009.

I must make a very bad fanboy.

Steve also talked about the post-PC era. Sadly, that’s where Apple seems to be heading.

No updates to Mac mini, i think it would be discontinued, as how long as one keep saying "i'm waiting" ? If only there was some better announcement, but there ain't... Its just Apple tagging us along for the joy ride.

At some point you gotta cut the cord. Most are probably in the "holding out" category.

For me, i've stopped buying Apple hardware totally..

my entire ecosystem is Apple....and has been forever. I am in that category.......and i just cannot get used to Win 10 at all. The trackpad does not do what Apple can....and it seems that every other day, M$FT is constantly putting out an update that takes forever to load...and it effectively reduces my time to get work done......
