Porsche today announced an updated My Porsche App that adds new vehicle functionality to the CarPlay experience in Porsche vehicles. With the app integration, audio, climate, comfort, lighting, and entertainment functions can be controlled directly in CarPlay.

According to Porsche, car owners can use the combined My Porsche App and CarPlay feature to do things like change radio stations, control the in-car temperature, and adjust the lighting. The car model shows up through CarPlay, and there are wellness modes like "relax," "warm up," and "refresh" that can be activated using the CarPlay quick actions feature.

All of the available vehicle functions can be controlled using Siri voice commands for hands-free adjustments when driving.

Porsche owners can activate the feature by scanning a QR code displayed in the PCM, and new CarPlay functions will be made available to Porsche owners as they are developed. The first vehicle to support the new My Porsche App and CarPlay integration is the Porsche Cayenne, which is available now. The updated app will be rolled out to other model lines in the future.

Note that while Porsche is using a clever app integration to allow for vehicle functions to be controlled through CarPlay, this is not the next-generation CarPlay experience that Apple has in development.

Apple last year previewed a range of new CarPlay functions that are in the works, including multi-screen support and CarPlay controls for vehicle functions. The next-generation CarPlay will be available only in new vehicles, and the first that support the updated CarPlay experience are expected later this year.

I wonder if they will add it to 911

I am taking delivery of new factory order 911 in Sept. Thank you Apple!

I remember either with iOS 12 or iOS 13, they announced an API for car manufacturers to have their own vehicle apps for CarPlay.

Here we see several years later and I believe this is the first brand to make an app using it? Does anyone know if any other brand ever made a CarPlay compatible app?

I’m really curious to see how this will end up, with a power struggle between car manufacturers and the big tech companies. Seems like Tesla is the only car company to have it all in-house and do it well. I just rented a Polestar 2 for a couple weeks and the software is a deal killer. A decade behind Tesla.

I have a 2022 Macan GTS. When I return from a trip this week we shall see. Not holding my breath.

Does it allow for homelink functions?

Id love to assign the two favorites (diamond buttons in porsche parlance) to something more useful than having one of those used up for the garage door.

Or, now hear me out, put knobs and switches within easy reach of the driver.
They are on a Porsche. Almost every Porsche is designed with a cockpit style setup. Beyond new Siri control functions tied to the Porsche app I am not sure what this is going to add.

better than tesla's buggy, barely functional UI. wish tesla had carplay support.

outside carplay and the cockpit display, the rest of the taycan HMI is .... well lets just say they make great software control algorithms but user interfaces are not their thing and have had a lot of reliability problems that require a two-finger salute to get to the reboot menu.

Take a look at the image in the article. Even in carplay 'mode' the taycan insists on showing their vertical button stack (home, phone, music, etc). This squishes the horizontal space carplay can use and just offers redundant buttons.

edit: that sounds negative. taycans are the best cars in the known universe, this is just a complaint about porsche HMI overall.

So only cars with the new CarPlay installed at the factory will work?

This doesn't really add up, as it's not hardware.

We shall see.

BTW, my rather expensive new car has terrible built-in navigation. CarPlay is very good. Not only that, but the navigation on the older model was much better. LOL

My experience is anything but such. Barely functional is the last word I would use to describe the interface.
Pretty accurate for my Model Y. I hate the UI, and their music player is barely functional. Every day I have to reboot because Apple Music stops working and I get "choose media source" - sometimes pressing the steering wheel button will work, sometimes switching to a different input and back will work, but most of the time a reboot is required. I love my Y, but the UI and bugs are absolutely infuriating. I want CarPlay support.

Srsly, touch screen controls for things that people frequently use sucks (whether it is touch screen via CarPlay or OEM vehicle touch screen.) Tactile feedback for some things is definitely a must if you want to claim less distractions for the driver.

Many manufactures have learned those lessons. Subaru (some climate things were buried in touchscreen menus). Volkswagen (they are switching from buttons that did not provide tactile feedback to the ones that do).

I'm all for adding stuff to CarPlay but not at the expense of buttons for things that just make sense (volume control, AC controls etc.)

Wait, so… the "Clever New App Integration" is that they built an app for iOS that runs inside CarPlay, which in turn runs inside their system?

"I can't wait to try this out in my Porsche XYZ" flex posts in 3...2....oh, wait, too late.
Because "I can't wait to try this out on my Mercedes XYX Class" would have made sense. Which set of owners would be most interested in seeing if this functionality is available for their cars.
