Question. I ordered the 3gs and did not port my current number over because my Alltel phone is under contract still until June 26th. Will I be able to still port my number over to the iphone once my contract does run out, after the phone is activated with another number? I'd really prefer to keep my current number but wasn't paying Alltel an early termination fee for one week short of fulfilling my contract.

Anyway, has anyone done this in the past? Can I do it?

I asked this exact question a few days back. The consensus, both from the AT&T rep that was posting here and from actually customers who had done it, is that it's quite easy to port a number over after you activate your iPhone (i.e. with a different number to start out with). HOWEVER, the recommendation was that you go into an actual AT&T store- that is, not a "licensed AT&T dealer," but a store owned an operated by AT&T. If you do that, you should have no problem. There should be no (additional) charge for doing this and they should be able to do it quickly and easily.
