Portable External HD for my MBP11?

Looking one for my laptop. Gonna buy my first portable external next weekend. 500gb is okay with me. I have the MBP '11 2.3 GHz Core i5

It's really up to you what you want. I have a couple WD portables and I like them. People like Lacie ... it just depends on what you want. You could even buy a 2.5" drive and enclosure.

I'd just go on Newegg and read the reviews. Seagate and WD have popular offerings.

Seagate GoFlex ultraportable 500GB USB 3.0 I got it from WalMart for 70 buck few months ago.

IF you have a 2011 USB 3.0 doesn't help. I have a late 2011 15" pro and picked up the WD studio portable harddrive. It has a firewire connection. I'd recommend a portable with firewire since you don't have USB 3.0.

if you decide to go with FW800 then Seagate GoFlex Ultraportable can let you change adaptor for either USB 2.0, 3.0 and FW800…
