Porting a number to a Pre-Ordered Phone

Gals and Guys:

If I preorder a phone on a new carrier, and put the info in for them to port my phone, when does that take place?

If it takes a week (or more) for my new (Sprint in my case) phone to get to me, is my number ported away from AT&T immediately??

Nope, I think it happens upon activation. We are porting a number and adding it to our family plan and the port hasn't occurred yet even though the phone has been ordered since the 7th.

What they said (and I was trying to contact them simultaneously) was to take their random number for now, and they could port my current number later.

Which I didn't think they could do, but hey, no worries. If there is a problem, I'll just port my current number to Google Voice.
