Other Portrait mode: Do iPhones 11/12 use both cameras?

I know on any iphone with a telephoto lens the phone uses both lenses to generate data for portrait mode. For the iPhones 11 and 12, which have two cameras but not a telephoto, does the phone use the ultra wide camera for depth information or does it create all the bokeh purely through machine learning? I can’t find definitive info on this. Anyone know?

For things or pets using ultrawide camera. I covered ultrawide lens and couldn't make a portrait photo of things...
