One the of the things that I don't like about my iPhone XR is the fact that they took away portrait mode for anythintg that isn't a person. I'm confused in reading the specs, but did they bring that back on the 12 or would it just be on the 12 pro?

Portrait mode on non-human subjects was already available on iPhone 11.

I don't think I noticed portrait mode ever limiting me to people. I've taken a lot of portrait mode pics of anything / everything over the years.

Its not limited to just people but it does not work well with other objects in my opinion. At least not as well as other phones do. Move further away/put object within statgelight...blah blah blah.

The iPhone XR has just a single camera. With only one eye, it can’t measure distance by parallax and has to use AI to find the subject and estimate distance. It’s hard enough to do that with human beings. If it’s much harder if you want to include inanimate objects, which can be any shape and size.
