I received an iPod Mini for Xmas :D So far it's great, but I noticed recently that when I charge it (leaving it plugged in overnight or until the screen says Charged) and turn it on the next morning when I get on the train, the battery level says only 75% charged.

That, and I have had to reboot it (holding down the apple and select button for 6 seconds) three times now in the past two weeks now.

Might I have a dud? Should I take it back to the Apple Rep where it was purchased for me?

Thanks for any advice...

Are you charging through USB 2.0? If so, try the original Apple adapter, this may quicken the charging process.

No, charged through the Firewire, but left it plugged in all night, so I would think it would be fully charged after 7 hours?

note that there's a delay in the battery indicator. if you start using the iPod (and not just put it back to sleep) and after a bit of time (less than 10 min.), the battery indicator still doesn't show fully charged, there is a problem.

what was the problem that needed resetting? give us more details and we can probably help you out.

OK, it never showed fully charged, only ever 75%.. I just restarted it now to check (not to play it) and the battery was down to 40%... and I only used it for 30 minutes before  (please note, I AM turning it off after I use it, I am not simply letting it play.....)

I would be playing it for about 30 to 45 minutes, put it on pause for a few minutes and the screen would go blank and it would lock up, I couldn't do anything. But, I could see it was still on because there was a slight tint of the pixels (as apposed to when it's off, you can't see anything). I read the online help and it said to plug it in, turn the hold on and off, then hold down the play and select button for 6 seconds.. That worked to reset it. But it is rather a pain... Not what I expected for a 375 CHF gift!

Can you help at all? Am going to pass by the Apple Reseller tonight...

Thanks!

yeah, you got problems. definitely take it to the store, explain your experience and they should at the very least diagnose it for you. if you can, i'd insist on a replacement since it does sound wrong. it should not freeze like that. i've had mine since Sept. and i had to reset once. i haven't found any difference between charging from my PB or the power brick or using FW as opposed to USB2, so i don't think that's a factor. in any case, charging overnight should do it. (you did leave the machine plugged in, right? if you charge via laptop and the laptop is not connected to the power adapter, it may stop charging once the machine is asleep, iirc.)

375 CHF?! dang. i lived in switzerland for two years - loved it. the dollar was a bit stronger back then too. ;) (actually, that was a bad thing... i was paid extra stipend to live in switzerland and the way it worked was, there was a fixed amount in CHF i'd get paid every month. since my base salary was in dollars, they'd convert the base salary into CHF and pay me the difference from the fixed amount in CHF. so weaker dollar would have meant i would have gotten more CHF...)

:( Off to the store I go..

I left my PB plugged into the mains to charge all night, so it wasn't sucking battery from the PB (I use my PB during the train commute too)

And, I never use the backlight...

Why oh why did you move back? :)

At 375 CHF, and the USD where it is, I end up paying 315 USD for it (or, the person who gave it to me for Xmas did...) A tad more expensive than via US Apple Store...

Cheers!

i was doing my doctoral research at cern, outside geneva.

so i was there for two years to do my research while still enrolled at an american university...

went everywhere in switzerland, though. name a city and i'm sure i've at least taken a train through it! (loved the swiss train system... clean, on-time and very, very efficient!) (and fairly affordable too, after the demi-tarif card...) ahhh, fond memories...

Sounds like you had fun! :D

When were you last here? If it hasn't been for the past few years, you might notice some changes.. Geneva is not as nice as it was 10 years ago..

:(

Oh well, must me actually getting older!

i was last in geneva summer of 2001... haven't been back since. the closest i came was munich last spring, and it brought back good amount of memories when i saw a sbb/cff train at munchen hb...
