I'm wondering if you guys think it's a possibility that iPhone 12 could have 3x optical zoom? Obviously the current telephoto lens on the iPhone 11 Pro is bad-ass, but I'm greedy and would love even more zoom.

In a perfect world, yeah I'd be all in! The zoom is the only reason I'm on XS Max and will upgrade to a Pro Max, so yeah, the more the better.

It would be great for video as zooming in from .5x to 1x to 2x while shooting video causes a slight sudden jerky change in the image since its switching lenses etc. If it were a true optical zoom it would be smooth since its using the same lens and sensor. The problem is it would be thick. Also your aperture would not be as fast on a optical zoom vs the 3 prime lenses the iPhone has now. I'm more of a prime lens guy due to lower light performance. I hope they put a 4th camera with say 80-90 mm telephoto but not sure if it will fit optically. Just wish it wasn't so obvious when shooting video and zooming when it switches lenses.

I would love to have the telephoto at ~85mm instead of 52 though that would break their transition from .5-1-2x.

Personally I would like to have a 3 lens setup with 16, 28 and 85mm

Bigger sensors over more lenses. But yeah not sure what can physically fit.

At this point too many lenses become ridiculous. I'd also love to have more optical zoom, but for portrait shots I feel like the 2x is perfect. Any more than that and it would look too zoomed in, but again - I'd use a bigger zoom for different occasions.

Doubt Apple will add that many lenses, unless they magically create a phone lens with variable optical zoom.

I hope so, given the fact that Samsung are putting 5x optical zoom in their next phone the Galaxy S11.
