Alright, let's commence Stage 2: Put the A12 in the MacBook non-Pro!
It's getting to the point that I wouldn't mind seeing a Retina MacBook with an A-series chip. Just as long as the MacBook Pro and desktop Macs remain on Intel.

Cant wait to trade in my X for an X Plus screen!! The X is fine, but I am so envious of the S9/S8 folks with their big screens.
I opted to simply wait for the iPhone X Plus. Fine with not upgrading to the latest iPhone every single year. :)

Hey! I just edited a screenshot from my iPhone X GeekBench. Increase my Twitter presence by reposting this everywhere.

Seriously, why would Apple make a new CPU for 10% gain? Plain ridiculous.

MacRumors must think we are all fools...

They’ve done it before with the A8 I believe which was only a marginal increase from the A7. I’m all for improvements to the processors but honestly who cares when we barely even notice it? An iPhone 8 performs no quicker than an iPhone 7 and the A11 improved on performance quite a bit. It’s iOS that needs improving and speeding up at this point which hopefully will be the case come September.

iPhone's are still the fastest phone's out there so I am not worried about an only 10% jump. Increased RAM is appreciated, but not something I have felt either. Promotion, any other screen enhancements, Face ID 2, and a better camera is why I'll upgrade this year.

Sounds like the era of yearly 50% to 2x CPU speed improvements is sadly coming to an end. :(

To those saying it doesn’t matter in a phone, sure, but if Apple starts to use A chips in MacBooks soon, it matters more there.

A new benchmark taken from a 2018 iPhone may give us some insight into just how much faster the new A12 is than the A11 in the iPhone X

The answer is "Not much" - My Geekbench result on my 8+ with A11 is 4227 Single-core and 10401 multi-core.

Nothing like the jump from A10 to A11 which blew the competition out of the water by a mile!

Apple employs a tick tock release for their A series processors. A7 -> A8 is only 25% faster while A8->A9 is about 2x faster.

A9 -> A10 is also about efficiency (quad core)

A10-A11 is the exception, they also focused on efficiency cores (now 6-cores) as well as bigger speed improvements. This is because of the X and the gesture based controls as well as animoji.

New design? -> marginal processor improvement.

Old design? -> faster processors and better cameras as well as under the hood improvements.

Should be very obvious by now. X was just a sneak peek for 2018 lineup.

me too, but I had no choice I had a 6 Plus that was damn slow even with a new battery and swtiched carriers so I needed more frequency bands available in the newer iPhones

Remember when they said the 6 Plus had enough memory at 1Gb?
Since then their memory optimisation approach seems to have been unceremoniously thrown out on the kerb though - at the time iOS was still (just) able to run smoother with 1gb than Android was with 2-3. Unfortunately as they have advanced through versions this has become less and less the case, to the point I don’t think iOS 11 has any real advantage over android (sans that it freezes multitasking apps). Maybe it will be a bit better with iOS 12 but I think those days are gone for good if they are moving towards laptop amounts of RAM now...

The 6 Plus was one I almost got, but ultimately held off as well. Even in 2014 I and others on this forum could tell the 1 GB RAM (same amount as both the 5 and 5s had going back to 2012) would become a performance issue. So I decided to make do with the 5s for another year, and upgraded to the 6s Plus in 2015 which turned out to be a very solid release.

My particular 6s Plus has cracks in the front glass and battery life is not quite what it used to be, so I'll be happy to upgrade this year. But otherwise it still works fine, though it's not running the latest version of iOS (still on iOS 10).

4GB of RAM is the most interesting take and will be the most beneficial. Improved processors by 10%? Meh, I don’t get excited about that anymore. There’s barely any difference between a 6S and an 8 in terms of speed. The RAM though makes the real difference, can never have enough of that. The more of it the better!

10% CPU improvements and 40% GPU improvements. I think in context, this is perfectly fine. The massive GPU improvements are important as apple is beginning to flex its custom GPU. Furthermore, Apple may be going for serious battery life improvements, and the extra RAM is a huge plus...

It may seem underwhelming, but I think it's because CPU's are fast enough now that it's less of a concern. GPU should be a bigger focus considering 3D, AR, VR, and games on iOS... And of course, more battery life is ALWAYS good.

I'm disappointed in these numbers if in fact true for the supposedly 6 core A12. I was thinking at least 5100/14,000 as bigger improvement than this.

Maybe Apple could be teasing us as the A11X and not the A12.

RAM uses battery because it needs to be refreshed every few ms. More ram = more power usage = less battery life. I suppose iOS could disable unused RAM on the fly, but I'm not sure they've optimized to that level.

It seems these improvements every year are just a complete waste of time, because every year Apple makes it run slower with iOS updates...

Apparently the new OS is substantially spiffier, performance wise, than the last couple. We'll see.
