Hey All, I think I found a possible fix for those who upgraded from 3G, 3GS, or 4 to the 4S and also restored from a backup. I found that after I did a "Reset Network Settings" my 3G speeds doubled (on AT&T). See the attached screenshot of before/after the "Reset Network Settings".

This worked for three 4S phones I tested on, two were upgraded from 4, and one from a 3GS. They were all three restored from backups. I am not sure if it works for Verizon or Sprint, but I know it works for AT&T.

Hope this helps!

Just to be sure. You're not on Wifi doing this test right? I see the Wifi symbol on your screenshot.

I was on Wifi when I took the screenshots. But if you look in the Speedtest app, it shows I am on the "Cellular" network.

Do I have to re-sync after this? Or can I just turn the phone back on and it'll reregister again.

No need to resync. But you will have to re-enter your Wifi passwords since it will also reset your wifi connections.

Has anyone else confirmed this? I get horrid 3G speeds despite being in a "4G" area (HSDPA+). In fact the 4S is no faster on 3G than my 3GS. Also, my understanding of "Reset Network Settings" is that it will kill all of my wifi passwords and bluetooth pairings as well. I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of setting that all back up again if this doesn't do anything for me....

Edit: Nevermind. Despite not wanting to lose my wifi passwords I tried this anyways and it did nothing for me. I was hoping for an improvement but it's exactly the same as before.

Tried this and mine actually became much slower!

Went from 3.5 mbps to less than 2 mbps...
lol

Ya guys, dont try it.

ATT is ok for me, just dont restore network settings or it messes up your iphone 4s.

Now im not even getting 1mbps after resetting network.

you guys are likely just seeing normal cellular data speed fluctuating that is completely independent of restoring as new.

I get about 5 MB when I run the test at night..but during the day....it gets worse...at times..sometime 1 or 2 MB..and sometime 5MB...so it varies.

with ATT

watch..if run the test at night..you get better result.

Nope.

Did a speedtest and got 3mbps.
Restored network
Did the same test at the same spot and got 1mbps.
Tried other locations around the home and got 1mbps or less when before i got at least 3mbps.

Dont restore network guys.

I get about 1mbps EVERYWHERE! I got just under 5mbps at one place, but thats it, everywhere else is 1mbps T_T

On the SpeedTest app, what Server are you connecting to? Did you test a different server to see if there is a speed difference?

----------

how do you reset the network settings lol

Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

Before:
Download 2.28Mpbs Upload 0.24Mbps Ping 67ms

After:
Download 0.61Mbps Upload 0.09 Mbps Ping 192

Ok, so I tested my connection on 3G.

3.87 Down 1.15 Up 162 Ping

Decided to do network reset...

1.07 Down 0.11 Up 558 Ping!!!

Periodically checked it again and was down to 0.05 Down and Up!

1 min later tried it again in the same place and it was back to 3.19 Down 1.32 Up

Really weird. I don't know what's going on.
