Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I couldn't find a thread like this.
Let's assume for a minute, that Force Touch is coming to the next gen iPhones (2015).

Anyone have any thoughts about how Apple could implement force touch in the next iPhone's software?
I've thought of a few places where/how they might use it in the OS.
  • Force Touch on multitasking to 'close all' apps
  • Force Touch in Notification Centre to 'clear all' notifications, just like on Apple Watch
  • In Messages, Force Touch to compose new message
  • In Mail, Force Touch to start a new email.
  • Force Touch on an open email to get at more options (trash, archive, reply, flag - eliminating the row of icons on the bottom)
  • Force Touch in Weather to get at different weather views - like Apple Watch
  • Force Touch in Calendar to start typing a new event
Any more?
Did I list something illogical? Let me know that too :p

(mods, please correct the title to say "force". Thanks)

How about force touch to zoom in camera? It would be really cool if the iPhone ever gets optical zoom! Or perhaps force touch to take a picture with flash without changing settings?

I would really like the option to force touch a link in safari to open it in a tab in the background.

Everything you listed here is logical. It just makes sense and did you think about the positioning of the options? On the larger iPhones at least they should be reachable.....

Here's my take.

-FT on home screen apps to show notifications at a quick view
-FT on text to define
-FT on links to preview (iPad)
-FT on selected text to select further (press harder to select sentence, paragraph and whole text)
-FT on fast forward and rewind to do so faster
-FT on email to flag
-FT to clear all apps/notifications
-FT on shutter to take 20fps burst shots
-Any FT trackpad tricks that can be implemented
-FT API

I don't think that it would implement :apple:Watch tricks, as the point of FT on that was that it was too small for any menus on the sides. On the iPhone it will work more like the MacBook.

I think good ideas but who is ever going to remember all those options other than a bunch of people on boards like this. And it if ends up doing something you don't want because you didn't want / know about it or you are wearing gloves. I would personally recommend that Apple goes slowly with this - and keep updating with dot releases. Maybe each should also be able to be turned off in settings.
Last I read force touch wasn't a popular feature on new Mac Books - we will see.

Force touch is just a fancy way of doing a long press. And the vast majority of the times that you may "practice" a hard touch, it ends up being a long press anyway.

Personally, I am more interested in the haptic feedback. I would love to see Apple add the sensation of pressing down on a iPhone button, just as Apple added the sensation of pressing down on the trackpad with the latest 13/15" MBPs.

THIS! brilliant and simple.

Most suggestions here make sense, with the exception of fore touching the multitasking to quit all recent apps. Apple has never advertised this, and I imagine they collectively roll their eyes when people insist on doing it.

I think FT is going to be confused with long press and hold. Hoping there is an option to turn off like touch ID first year. But theyve made weird choices with options like shake to undo is something you cant change i iOs8. I know 9 you can

These are all pretty much good ideas, and the possibilities of shortcuts and such are virtually endless with ForceTouch. The problem as a poster has stated above, is that there could end up being too many options, and it would be hard to memorize them all and what they do.

Perhaps a slow rollout with these shortcuts will help. Oh, and they could store all the FT shortcuts in the Tips app to make it more useful, since we're forced to have it.

The op has stated some nice ones... Like Force touch on a mail to compose a mail, but umm.. The Icon is easier I guess..bit if u think about it, it's just another way to a particular task, just another method. This is just my opinion on what the OP thinks.. Obviously the thoughts are good! And nice! :)

What I think, is that force touch on an iPhone with a 4.8 or 5.5 screen, would mostly be useful for doing task that would not only be easier, but also improve productivity .. Kind of like what "slide from the edge of the screen to go back or forward" did.. So force touch.. I think would be great way to think out of the box...

Man it's hard to think what another dimension could add! I've been thinking for a while and I haven't thought any wow! ones.. only some just similar to the ones stated by the OP and other comments.

My thoughts may not be out of the box :p:D
