Tim - "Johnny put the head phone jack in! We are already having sinking iPhone sales! Lets not kill the iPhone all together!"

Johnny - Stomping his feet and his bottom lip curled, "I'm designer extraordinaire, my design, do you understand, mine, mine, mine! I know what boys want, err, I mean people want.”

Yup, there are many people like me who travel and very much enjoy their $300 noise cancelling headphones and wouldn't like them orphaned at Apple's whim. And many of us use the jack for other tools like wind meters with companion apps that use that jack. Plus all of the small merchants like my sister who use the jack for their credit card readers. Let alone others who use external mic's that use that jack.

All this while still being able the charge via the lightning jack are pretty compelling.

I would hold onto my 6s and then probably jump ship if Apple pulls this stunt as there is no good technical reason to pull this jack for at least a couple more years.

Same old uninformed hyperbolic memes.

1) Your $300 headphones won't be "orphaned at Apple's whim". There will be adapters.

2) Most likely the adapter will continue to work with your wind meter. Whatever that is.

3) So likely will your card reader, which clearly has to be replaced with a chip reader anyway unless you're happy assuming all fraud liability.

4) External mics will also work with an adapter.

5) Lightning pass-through connectors, just like on a string of Christmas Tree lights, solve the problem of being able to charge the device while using any Lightning device.

6) Apple isn't doing this on a whim. Intel is also marketing a push into USB-C audio. There's a reason for this, and it isn't just to make products thinner (I have to give you credit for not trotting out that tired meme). If Apple does this, all the other flagship phones will follow suit within a year to remain competitive. So you won't really have anywhere else to go except to downgrade. I'm constantly bemused by those who think Apple would do this if it wasn't necessary to make improvements and add new features, especially when their iPhone sales are on the decline -- to do so would be market suicide.

There's so many misconceptions here, I don't know where to start.

1) Having the DAC conversion and amp closer to the final source is always better as it reduces the chance of radio and electronic interference. Arguably there's not much concern here, but it is a factor in purity of sound.

A good start would be, if you stopped posting rubbish. For the love of God, we are talking about a 3 ft cable here. Not a 100 km landline.

Radio and electronic interference. Oh, really

Apple can have a dance and parade about how environmentally friendly it is, but (potentially) moves like this demonstrate the absolute opposite.

Literally 0% of me cares if I have to use a lightning port adapter or not. In this world, there are far more important things to get worked up about.

Well that may be you buy that doesn't speak for others. More things to carry around and possibly forget... Or buy another from Apple.

I just plan to leave my earphones plugged into it - then i'm as likely to forget it as a I am to forget my earphones (which admittedly does happen every so often).

In that case it's simple for you.

I use Bluetooth at the gym. Beats studio at work and home. When at the store or where ever I use the apple ear buds I keep in my car. A bit too much cable juggling for me personally.

So Apple fans were previously praising Apple for ditching the headphone jack saying that it'll give a better overall design but now they're praising Apple AGAIN claiming that Apple isn't stupid enough to ditch the headphone jack? ah, too much hypocrisy!

That's simply not true. The community was split on this issue last time it came up. Some praised Apple for being brave, others condemned the potential move. While many are now praising the retention of the headphone jack, it's not the same people that were previously jumping with joy. I doubt you'll find many people that have changed their mind.

This is inevitable when there is such division about a potential change, it's got nothing to do with hypocrisy. I suspect you just came to that conclusion as it's what you wanted to see.

What "cable juggling" are you referring to? You already use three different sets of headphones. One doesn't have have a cable (BT). You use the free Apple earbuds when out, and Apple is going to give you a free set of Lightning earbuds to replace them. That leaves your beats headphones at home and office, attached to which you can leave your Lightning adapter.

I fail to see your problem with this. You need exactly one $20 adapter you can leave connected to your one set of headphones that needs it. No "cable juggling" at all.

Not going to go into a long debate about something that hasn't happened yet and is not even confirmed. Should it happen I know I wouldn't embrace it. Beyond that one can only speculate and I don't feel like getting involved in that.

Why on earth would you want to use the Apple earbuds, they're awful. Surely you gym bluetooth ones are better than that? Unless you budgetted out on them.

Apple will obviously ship a wireless solution anyway so this bizarre three headphone thing you've created still only requires a single adapter you can leave connected to the beats.

I mean my in ear headphones alone cost more than all that added up and i'm not remotely bothered by this possibility.

I'm glad someone pointed out the elephant in the room there
