Hi,
I might get an iPhone and move from my Pixel.

But I cant find any info in how to migrate my extensive WhatsApp chat history from one phone to the other.

Has anyone found a solution that worked for you?

Also, how about custom ringtones? Last time i checked, the only way to add custom ringtones was by purchasing them from the store, is that still the case?

One more question, how can I add my own music from my NAS to an iPhone and use the build in Music player without using a computer or iTunes?

Thanks.

To the last question about music. From my research; unless the music is purchased from Apple or transfered via iTunes - then no. There are 3rd party apps that allow the download of music from a cloud service, and played on the 3rd party app music player (not the native Apple music app) - don't know if the 3rd party app would integrate with a NAS.

So same as before...

Thanks for the info!

1. On whatsapp, it's unfortunate. Even Whatsapp themselves don't have a solution for cross platform chat export. Although your groups will remain, you won't have your chat history on the iPhone.

2. I believe you can create custom ringtone by simply having a short enough AAC file, rename the extension to .m4r, and transfer it using iTunes.

3. You cannot just drag-n-drop. You either have to use a 3rd party app or iTunes.

Have you seen those programs that supposedly does that chat transfer?

Sadly, I cant find a review of them.

Custom ringtones are quite easy

But limited to 30 seconds, absolutely no way round that. You don’t have to have bought the tune, it can be an mp3 you’ve ripped from anywhere, but you will need a computer.

With your music question you seem to be asking for the keys to the walled garden, and using the words Music and iTunes in the same sentence confuses me. You do know Music replaced iTunes?

I am (obviously) an Apple enthusiast, converted late in life. But iPhones are restricted, that’s just a fact.

I don't know if this will help with your WhatsApp message history, but years ago when I first moved from my Samsung Note 4 to the iPhone 6Ss Plus, my text message history and my call history were very important to me. I downloaded the Move to iOS app, which basically mirrored my Android phone to my new iPhone, including pictures in my gallery, text message history, picture message history, and call history.

Couldnt find that app on the app store (looks like another victim of apple draconian censorship or maybe the dev removed it).

I remember setting up an iPhone and it asked me if I wanted to migrate from Android, I wonder if that still exist and if it would do such transfer.

As I have said many times here and other forums, I started using Apple products since the Apple ][ days.

But I dont fall under the rabid cult members category, since I have always been the first to call out their BS.

That is the main reason why I dont have an iPhone.

Currently, I have the following at home:

MacMini (Intel)
MacBook Air
MacBook Pro 15 (x3)
Mac Pro 4.1 (cMP)
iPad Pro 12 3rd gen.

I’m pretty sure that option is still there. I write “pretty sure” because I recently set up iPads for both of my parents and that option showed up, but I don’t remember what the options were when I set up my iPhone 12 Pro Max (I wasn’t paying attention).

My question (and not being a wise ass) is why are you considering moving to an iPhone ?
I am tired of the poor quality of the Pixel phones.

I had a Pixel 1 XL and it simply died on its sleep. Was replaced by Google, since it was still under warranty.

Then I got a Pixel 3 XL and the glass that covers the camera simply got detached from it. I had to pay out of my pocket for the repair, even though, it was under warranty.
Then that same phone didnt had a working NFC, so Google replaced it. The replacement had something lose inside (could hear it when i shaked the phone).
That same replacement happened to also have a bad SIM port. Found that out when I switched from Fi to another provider. Fi was using eSIM, the new one uses a regular SIM, so I could use that phone.

That brought me to the conclusion of considering an iPhone. Haven't yet.

I cannot buy a Samsung phone, even though, their hardware is excellent, the bloatware in that thing is insane.

I only see two options for phones, Pixels or iPhones.

And thanks for asking, its refreshing to see positive conversations online.

Thats what I wonder, what will be imported.

If my Whatsapp chats could be migrated that way, it will remove a huge barrier.

In my experience of Android phones 2010 - 2019 inc the hardware quality was always spot-on. I had a Motorola Defy, a Moto G, a Sony Z3, and an HTC 10. The HTC, I believe they make the Pixel?, is a real tank I dropped on pavement a couple of times and into water once, I even used the edge of its stout metal body to knock in escutcheon pins. All are still operational, all were quickly abandoned by Android updates which I guess is a reason Pixel is in your shortlist. I don’t know what WhatsApp actually does, probably it’s like Facebook which I also don’t use, but is it or your history of it truly indispensable? If any online App including personal history isn’t device portable I couldn’t think it well written.

Reading your words carefully I’m convinced you’re ready for an iPhone, just talking yourself into it 😀

They did the first one and I believe the second one. After that, was Google in house and they all had issues.

Bingo! I got burned by other Android phones before and is the exact reason why I stick with Pixel.

Count yourself lucky. Its a chat program that is used by more than 2 billion people in the world. But sadly, were bought by Facebook and even worse, everyone that I communicate only uses that.
but is it or your history of it truly indispensable?
Sadly, yes. I need to transfer all the chats I have.

The ones that come up on Google seems to do the job, but I can't find any real reviews of them.

Indeed. But Apple draconian censorship (Steam Link blocked, Stadia has to use a work around, emulators like RetroArch are blocked because, etc) , proprietary dongles and worse, the cult rabid members that doesnt accept the fact that others do see flaws on their magical i-devices gives me pause.

That said, I cannot deny the software and hardware quality of iPhones and I am beyond frustrated with the poor quality of the Pixel phones I had.

Just went from Note 10+ to Pro Max. Couldn’t figure out how to move the messages. If they are truly important to you then iPhone may not be good option. Some of my chats are work related but nothing I need to keep track of. After further consideration I figured that since I rarely need a history it is not a big deal. And the message file can become bloated and after time irrelevant.

Yeah, that’s the thing about two different platforms, they both make it difficult to move data between them. They want you to stick to their platform. Here in Mexico everyone and their grandma use WhatsApp (including most businesses). I’ve had no problems whatsoever moving my WhatsApp chat history from my old X to my new mini, but I imagine the same wouldn’t have been possible if I were to 'upgrade' (😛) to a Pixel...

Can’t beat an iPhone, in my opinion. Coming from Android it takes a few days to adjust, but when you do you’ll be smiling.

Not understanding your music issues. You have an Apple computer. iTunes will make it easy to transfer your music. Yes, you will first have to import your music into iTunes. I cannot believe your music resides only on your Pixel, but even you can work around that if so. With thumb drives for one if Androids and Macs cannot directly communicate.

Some years ago, Apple encouraged transitions from Android to iPhone with built in software like Move. So possibly they don't support that anymore perhaps because it is just to costly to deal with Android fragmentation between phone manufacturers so it is difficult to have solutions that "just work".

While I am a big fan of Apple since the late 80's, pretty much choice is now a wash between PCs, Macs, Androids, and iPhones (absent long discussions of philosophy and updates or software availability on one platform versus another). Thus, it is now all about ecosystems. Rather surprising with all your Apple products you chose to go with Android I must say, especially considering the technical gap between iPhones and Androids for so many years.

If total control over your phone was the important consideration back then (can't think of another reason), you could have chosen to jail break your iPhone.

I havent use iTunes in a million years. In typical Apple fashion, it dictates what format you can use, how to store it, etc. iTunes was never friendly, if you bought music from somewhere else.

Bought or recived a free song? I need to copy it to a folder, then tell iTunes to import it and then, it will go where and how it wants. Its that song on FLAC format? sucks to be you.

You are correct, it resides on a NAS, before that, was a file server.

Being using Apple products since the Apple ][. But todays Apple computers are not the same as the ones before. Now they are more like disposable appliances.

The sad reality is, I went with Android because of price.

Not that I am a control freak, but the sad reality is, sometimes, you do need full access to your device and the iPhone is way too locked down.

I know that my replies are overly negative, but trust me they are because I bumped into too many unclimbable walls with Apple devices for no logical reasons.

But as I said, wont deny their build quality, which is whats affecting me for a while.

Lets see how it goes.
