As I have posted I always believed that Apple Pay and Beats could be the catalyst for an updated Ipod Touch as Apple would want those two services in more hands and not less.

I'm excited, have had an iPod Touch of one generation or another for years now, current gen is making me crazy with lag/slowness, time for a new processor Apple...

This would be great if they did release it. Would contemplate selling my iPad mini for it. All I really care about is a reasonably updated processor. A gold color option with a black faceplate would be pretty sweet, but not holding my breath.

I expect it to have an A7 with 1GB RAM.

Unfortunately, I think that's probably a good prediction. If I could have it all, it would have an A8 with 2GB RAM, the curved design of iPhone 6 (and same screen size as the 6), gold with black faceplate, Touch ID, Apple Pay, and 10 hour battery. Starting at $249. But . . . I think out of that list the only real possibilities might be the gold color option and Touch ID.

Just A Glorified DAP

The iPod Touch is merely a glorified DAP, and as such...must now offer at least 24/96 audio quality, a very decent DAC, and 128 GB storage to complete with the other popular DAPS on the market.

Yes, I know it also has wifi, email, the internet, apps, and so forth...but the tiny screen size really limits that practical usage (hence the iPad Mini) which is a far better choice.

With the new sleek Astell & Kern AK Junior DAP just coming out which does support 24/192 audio and has a 192 GB storage option...for just $499 (and the several other Hi Res DAP options available today) the iPod Touch as a "Music Player" is now being left way behind.

Unless Apple makes a significant upgrade to these features...I can't see it staying around much longer.

I couldn't agree more, well said.

Apple need bloody lossless of ANY kind by now; but where on earth is it circa 2015 is anyone's guess?! Yes, we know the issues (eg. mobile storage, bandwidth, etc.) but regardless, by now they should be offering more and leading the pack as the industry leader by upping the quality.
Yadda yadda yadda... this discussion is getting old, but never dealt with. If some people have the money for bloody vinyl, they can surely afford lossless digital – wake up Apple, wake up, as you're leaving money on the table! Another reason I've never bought any iTunes music ever. Yawn.

Not always. For some users, the smaller screen is a plus. People like me want a pocket-sized device. For example, I make extensive use of my iPod Touch as a camera. Especially while traveling, it's nice to have an item I can have on me at all times, that takes good quality photos and video, and with decent storage capacity. Although I have an iPad Mini, it does not satisfy these particular needs.

The size is also ideal for use as a remote control. I use it both with Apple TV and Yamaha components via their wi-fi control app.

I purchased an iPod Touch last year...but after just two weeks returned it...coz it was wrecking my vision. Altho, I initially intended using it as a "music player" with my Cypher Labs Theorem 720 amp/dac...I found myself squinting at the tiny screen, checking emails, browsing the web, etc - which was straining my eyes like crazy.

Yeah, I get that the iPT has a sleek, cool design and is the perfect size for a pocket...BUT, in reality (as is)...it doesn't do anything really well.

I will buy one if it can play flac.. Yes I know you can convert but it's a pain in the ass..

So is my 64GB.

Funny how you people have more storage than i do, yet i barely even scraped my 32GB lol Other people have different needs than i do i guess

I sold my 64GB iPod touch middle of last year for $80, and swapped it with an 80GB iPod video, it's been great! I ran out of storage so I had to go bigger (about 8,000 songs or so). I then got the last of the 160GB iPod Classics just before they got discounted.

Honestly, I like the 5th gen (iPod) better because the clickwheel is more responsive than the Classic for me. I've finally gotten to the point that I have to compress my music to 256kbps to fit it all on the 80GB drive

My lossless files still fit on my Classic, but it's close to 120GB. So a 128GB iPod touch might not even work with the size of iOS now days. But Apple really needs something in their lineup. Especially when an iPod from 2006 holds more than any current iPod in 2015!

I'll be holding onto these for a while though, as I've already got Tarkans CF adapter for it :)

I'd love to see the return of the iPod touch, my first one was a 2nd gen that I still have, and it still gets used on a regular basis to play Pandora on a dock, and I gave it to my mother to use during her walks. Battery still holds a great charge for a 2008 iOS device.

To me, a 4.7" IpT would be the ideal tradeoff... I can still fit it in my pocket without the screen being too small.

I love how people are moaning about the Touch screen size, which is bigger than the iPhone screen size was for over five years (from 2007 to 2012). The 'tiny' screen size of the iPhone 3/4 didn't seem to make that device limited on usage - it seemed pretty popular!
