Screen rotation is built into iOS, as far as going from Portrait to either CW Landscape or CCW Landscape. But last time I checked, you can't turn the device upside down (home button on top) and get the interface to snap-rotate to accomodate. So, if the app is only for portrait mode, or the user likes portrait mode over either landscape mode, wire pokes them in the belly.

The cord can go behind the device (from the top).

But, Bluetooth headphones ftw. Good point. :)

Sure you can

Could do... if you want to prop it on the power button

There is no problem, the power button needs quite a push.

Of course, it’s not hard to just turn your iPad upside down, but that relocates the home button awkwardly.
It does place the home button in a more awkward position but I find myself rarely using it these days. I find the home gesture to be much better since my iPad is used in all four orientations and I don't have to worry about where the button is today.

Well, my question was more related to the earlier comment, where there would be a loss of functionality with the loss in number of pins. I see your point of loss in bandwidth but that will not reduce the functionality. And what kind of a bandwidth loss are you talking about here? I doubt it will be anything huge compared to the current dock connector. USB end is the limiting factor anyway, correct?

Since I don't think anyone knows what all of the pins are there for, perhaps Apple is just acknowledging that there isn't a need for as many pins now. For a charger, I'd figure that there are really only three pins necessary, and one of them can be the casing of the plug itself. Figure audio and video, and they can possibly be done on one pin, or three or four to push the speed and capabilities, but does 30-pins make sense? I remember an early iPod I had where the center of the connector in the slot got bent somehow and in trying to straighten it to plug it in to synch/charge it, it broke. I'm sure it's happened to others. I doubt that there is a 'perfect' connector, but it might be time for Apple to change.

EDIT: Bandwidth isn't only a function of the number of pins. Using better quality connectors and cable with proper shielding and/or suppression would work well too, maybe better.

True for iPhones but the iPad has always been able to work any way round.

Just did a test with my iPad (albeit a 1st gen), and the weight of the iPad alone had no trouble triggering the power button.

Oh ok i dont know about the first gen. I have no trouble using it in this position with mine (3rd gen).

Ahhhh when was the last time u checked on an ipad?

Sent from ipad UPSIDE DOWN!!

No, I agreed with you there. There is way more bandwidth possible. But bandwidth isn't the only functionality of the dock connector. Charging - well that's easy and will be integrated - and audio in a "simple" form is important to some degree as well. If you (have to) use all pins simply for a bandwidth connection and you don't have analog audio seperate, it will cause stated consequences. So, looping through audio from the headphone jack makes sense because you don't have to bother about it and don't loose 3-4 pins (stereo 3, stereo + microphone 4).

If you angle it about 45 degrees away from you and try pressing things on screen (particularly along the bottom), there's no problem?

EDIT: Perhaps you were referring to docking my iPad in my car? In which case I assure you I do dock my iPad in my car...

Toyota or Lexus? I've been wondering how to dock an iPad in my FJ. Is yours actually docked, or Velcro'ed in place? I have even thought of gutting a Mac Mini and hooking it up somehow to my car with a small display for active GPS and side and rear cameras. I emailed Steve Jobs with the idea that they missed the boat with the idea to create a 'smart car stereo system' and could hand their lunches to all of the other companies involved, but never heard back. Imagine a 'smart stereo' in your car. One that automatically synches with your iTunes account and can stream music and, while not in motion, handle email, web browsing, and messaging all from a touch screen in the vehicle... Champion idea, I'd say!

Tim Cook wasn't kidding when he said "There's a lot to look forward to...". What a great year for Apple :)

I always put my iphone in my pocket upside down so I'm glad they're putting the headphone jack on the bottom.

ikr, i'm really racking my mind to understand how this is supposed to be troubling news.

Maybe for certain after market dock connectors in certain situations, but with a new dock connector style, ppl are going to be at the drawing board anyway.

'99 Toy. Corolla. It is a proper dock, it's a bit rough, but I can't really finish it properly because due to the size of the center console and size of the iPad it's impossible to finish without making it permanent (which I don't want to do...).

I used to have a Mac Mini in there with a TS, that didn't really go well. Here's an (incomplete) pic:

PM me if you want to know more. Don't want to get too OT :D

Steve jobs would have never let this monstrosity happen

Steve Jobs would have read the thread first and then would have only contributed if there was any productive input possible. Well, I'm not Steve Jobs either, so, I quote what you missed to make it easy for you:

Blah blah double down on secrecy blah blah.

Blah, Steve would never have allowed this blah blah.

Happy? :D

Stick a metal screw driver in it and tell me if it's magnetic ~fingers crossed~ !

Erm, of course I mean iPad, why else would I specifically say iPad...?

Nice, you can even get direct AC cooling for that overheating ipad3..! ;)

how interesting news...like maybe a part that maybe belongs to the ipad mini.

here´s another possible part:
