After taking a chance on the Nano-texture glass with my new iMac 2020 order, I was disappointed to find the the display fuzzy as has been mentioned in other threads here on the forum. I even gave it a few days to adjust to but decided this afternoon to call and process a return.

Well, I suppose I should be glad I tried this before boxing it up, but I discovered that (at least for me) turning off font smoothing under General in System Settings cleared everything up. So much so I now need to cancel the return and see if I can get my trade-in going again.

Would like to hear if anyone else finds this a viable fix for their circumstances. I've not been a fan of the glossy display and really do love the Nano-texture glass. Now about the contrast...

What impact does turning off font smoothing have on images though?

There was another user on here yesterday, who posted comparison photos of his desktop, showing essentially the same image on both nano and standard glass. Even the background wallpaper was softer on the nano glass. I'm not sure turning off font smooth would have any impact on that?

That's a good point. Images weren't bothering me, only text. I'll take a deeper look later today and post my impressions.

This is definitely a YMMV situation but for those waiting weeks to receive an iMac only to have to send it back because of the Nano-texture, it's worth a try.

Are you able to post up some photos of text on your nano screen, with font smoothing on and off?

This isn't a fix. You are just making the fonts more pixelated to begin with.

Don't know if this helps--I took video with iPhone x2 magnification about 5" from screen and slowly scrolled up and down. I had the display at right-angle to open sun coming in from window, and tilted the iPhone a bit towards the window, which has the effect of maximizing the "Nano effect". As I scroll up and down, you can see things are totally sharp, just you see them through the Nano surface. This is VERY exaggerated (both due to shooting at an angle, and the video artifacts introduced by shooting a display) compared to real life, as from normal viewing of 24-30" (for me) you just don't see this. I have gone back and forth between non-Nano and Nano, and due to the absence of reflections, prefer the Nano--YMMV, and recommend you look prior to deciding...

Does the text look blurry in comparison to the regular iMac? Or just compared to the glass?

Also besides that, would you recommend the nano? I'm not a big fan of glare on displays (at all.)

Thanks!

I've already endlessly played this game (on, off, on, off) with the font smoothing while wearing a $500 pair of office glasses and it's pointless (i.e, I've never seen clearer than this), and it's like comparing an apple you just took out of the fridge to one you took out five-minutes ago. Taste the difference? No, you really don't.
